Team Battle Time!
Last time, we let the year 2007 scrap it out with 1997 in a vicious battle for mixtaping supremecy. Now it's time to make a very important decision: Are you a SAINT or a SINNER?
The SAINTS Team will try to kill the SINNERS with KINDNESS, while the SINNERS, uh, won't. Feel free to interpret these teams and your role on these teams in the most creative way possible.
Which side will you choose? When you've decided, make a mix to prove to the rest of The Collective which side is superior. Choose wisely, or you might just end up like that Nazi guy who drank from the wrong cup in that one Indy movie...
The fine print: You may only enter one mix for this contest. If you submit a mix for both sides, you will be disqualified and will not be awarded anything.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting:
Mix Contest 24 - Heaven (to be on the SAINTS) or Mix Contest 24 - Hell (to be on the SINNERS) in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the four-weeks, the person holding the
number one spot for EACH team will take home 1000 points and a super-rad badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze. Every participant for the team with the highest
average mixtape score will earn 100 points and a badge in honor of their efforts.
So, get to it. NOW!

Congratulations to Bea, the first "Contest Contest" Winner. Her idea edged out Derhay's, who's mind-nugget will automatically be re-submitted for the next contest. Her theme should allow for everyone to get quite creative, so hopefully lots of people will step up to the plate.
The idea: Create a new soundtrack to a film of your choice by re-tracking each scene that has music. Bonus Points for musicals.
Here is her original idea:
"...specific scenes where music was used would be re-tracked, and in the description field for every song picked would be the name of the scene in the movie and the song originally used in it, and it would be in chronological order. The Alternate Soundtrack, you know. A real challenge could be to do this with musicals (only) and find songs that could replace the original songs exclusively written for the musical. "
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 22' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the contest, the person holding the number one spot will take home 500 points and a super-rad badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.

The weather is warming up (at least in my parts) and I'm so anxious for nice weather that I could spit. Let's all
save up our money and go on a group vacation? Where, you say? Personally, I'd opt for Iceland. Or New Zealand. Or West Bank.
The idea: Craft a soundtrack mix for your dream vacation.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 21' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the contest, the person holding the number one spot will take home 500 points and a super-rad badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.

TWENTY CONTESTS! Yow! I decided that in honor of the big XX, we shall compile epic lists of songs that have stood our respective tests of time. Songs that never seem to age, songs we can hear, over and over again, and not grow weary of it's contents.
Yeah! That's the idea: Craft a tape of songs that have stood you personal 'test-of-time',
whatever that may be.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 20' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the contest, the person holding the number one spot will take home 500 points and a super-rad badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze. Every participant will earn 100 points just for playing.
ps - bonus points for MJ.

Well hello! Fancy meeting you here! Did you hear the news? Yeah! There's a new contest! Hell yeah!
Here's the idea: Craft a mix using songs from another time in your life.
We all go through life changes, evolutions (or devolutions, for that matter) and general shakeups. The overall concept for this contest is to craft a mixtape that represents another phase in your life, be it good or bad.
For example: Personally, I would craft a mixtape that encompasses my overall terrible taste in music during my early, naive highschool years. Damn embarrassing, my taste was.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 19' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the contest, the person holding the number one spot will take home 500 points and a super-rad badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze. Every participant will earn 100 points just for playing.

Hark! A contest doth descend upon ye olde mixtapecollective.org! Rejoice!
Okay, maybe it's not *that* glorious, but we do have a pretty neat contest. Here's the idea: Craft a mix that you would give as a gift.
Better to give, you know. So, in the spirit of gifts and friendships and music and family, compile a mixtape. Or a gifttape, as I have decreed them. Just be sure to let us in on your thought process.
For example: Personally, I would craft a mixtape for my father based to listen to while we play a game of booze chess. I'd make it rockin' because he's in for a drunken beating. I'm not looking for a checkmate, I want him to suffer. I want complete capitulation to a soundtrack of Zappa.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 18' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the three-ish-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home 500 points and a super-rad badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze. Every participant will earn 100 points just for playing.
Get your ass to mars.

Gather round, children, for I have a surprise for you. It's an open-ended contest that I've been sitting on for a bit, suggested by our very own sledgbrainerd.
Here's the idea: the craziest mixtape you can scheme up.
It's totally up to you about how to interpret said idea. Songs about going crazy, crazy variety, crazy hardcore, crazy lame. Whatever. Run with it.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 17' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the three-ish-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home 500 points and a super-rad badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze. The rain is pelting against my windows. How suddenly summer seems to fade. I know we've got people all over the world and they can't feel the pangs of winter, but I thought a seasonal contest would be just perfect.
Here's the task: Make a representational mix for a season. Any season. A sad-bastard mix for the dead of winter, a joyous mix reminiscent of summer, whatever. Make it good.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 16' in all three keyword fields and activate it. Sans the quotes.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the three-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home 500 points and a super-rad badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze. This last year, I've been to a rash of weddings. All my friends (including Corey [yay!]) are getting hitched. Weddings, like funerals, have always interested me. Not because of the fact that they're both big events that impact the life of family and friends, but because they're both one of the rare times that a solid sountrack can make a world of difference in terms of the emotional imprint.
So, here's the task: Make a mix for a wedding and/or a funeral. It could be your wedding, your funeral, a funeral for MJ, a wedding for OJ, whatever -- make your dream mix, but explain why.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 15' in all three keyword fields and activate it. Sans the quotes.

So, I've been holding out on this theme for a long time. It's a gimme, as far as contests go. The roadtrip is something we've all (hopefully... right?) experienced. Like milk to Oreos, a rock-solid mixtape makes the voyage oh-so-much better. And we all know, it's the trip, not the destination. Unless the destination sells M80s. Then, it's all about the destination.
So, here's the task: make the perfect mix for your dream roadtrip, either real or fantasy. Keep in mind the following questions: where the hell are you going? who the hell is with you? why the hell did you eat so many Fritos? are we there yet?
For those of you that happen to live in the US, this is a perfect opportunity to hone your summer-road-trip skills. Get on it.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 14' in all three keyword fields and activate it. Sans the quotes.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the three-weeks AND one day, the person holding the number one spot will take home 200 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.

We've been sticking to "themed" mixtape contests, so I thought we'd switch it up yet again and bust out The Potpourri Mixtape.
Your entry in this contest must follow the format indicated below. Follow the track themes as strictly or as loosely as you want, but your tape must adhere to the following format or risk disqualification.
I command you to go crazy. Hella crazy:
- A favorite album opener
- A song from a movie
- A song that the Wu Tang Clan would make fun of
- A song used in a TV commercial
- A song where the title of the song is not in the lyrics of said song
- A song by a 'grunge' band
- A song by a two-hit wonder (or a one-hit, this one is hard...)
- A song that your parents would probably disapprove of
- A song that references the internet / computers.
- * Guilty pleasure wildcard *
- A short song
- A song for listening to while playing the original Zelda
- A theme song for your personal montage
- Teenage angst
- My, that's a funky-ass bassline you have there
- Fuck this, I'm leaving
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 13' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the two-weeks AND one day, the person holding the number one spot will take home 200 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.

Two words: Team Battle.
Last time, we let the robots duke it out against the monsters in a colossal death clash of the mixtaping titans. Now, it is time for yet another wonderful team battle with an added challenge: THE SEVEN YEAR MIX.
Let's break it down. We have two teams: '97 and '07. Team '97 can only use songs from the 1990-1997 timespan. Likewise, Team '07 can only use from the 2000-2007 timespan. Both sides have their advantages and their weaknesses. TEAM '97 can cherrypick from some indisputable classics, but TEAM '07 has some really fresh shit available.
Which side will you choose? When you've decided, make a mix to prove to the rest of The Collective which era is superior. Choose wisely, or you might just end up like that Nazi guy who drank from the wrong cup in that one Indy movie...
The fine print: You may only enter one mix for this contest. If you submit a mix for both sides, you will be disqualified and will not be awarded anything. Also, if you include songs that fall outside of the time period, your mix will be removed from the contest. I really don't want to have to check every single track on your mixes, but I will --I'm that much of a stickler (see also: nerd).
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting:
Mix Contest 12 - T97 or Mix Contest 12 - T07 in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the four-weeks, the person holding the
number one spot for EACH team will take home 500 points and a super-rad badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze. Every participant for the team with the highest

Straight up, let's just admit it -- we're all kind of dorks in one way or another. You wouldn't catch me dead at a 'hot' danceclub (unless someone managed to wheel my lifeless corpse there [which is totally something my friends would do]), but I do enjoy cutting a rug to some particularly funky choice tracks.
Your mission, should you decide to play along is to come up with your best dance party mix, but try to base it around an interesting concept -- who would attend your dance party? where would it be? would you be wearing pants? your pants? etc.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 11' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Play by the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the two-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home a whopping 400 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.
BUT WAIT, that's not all. To the TOP 3 winners, I will personally mail off some real-life badges in the form of 1" buttons (care of an offline collaboration of the always-amazing riotsheelds and I (it was mostly her -- I suck). AWESOME.
So, get to it. NOW!

Imagine this: it's 2393 and modern civilization as we know it has ceased to exist. A uber-high tech lifestyle exists, but after WW14 (moon vs. earth), all art, literature and music have been destroyed. But, luckily for us, there is but one ghetto-blaster boombox still in existence.
Now if given the opportunity, what mixtape would you create for the future inhabitants of Earth? If you had just one tape to seal in a time capsule, what would be on it? And that's what the contest is all about.
So, parlay your stashes and come up with a 90 minute mix of glory. The funkiness of the future depends on it.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 10' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Play by the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the two-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home a whopping 400 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.
Many thanks to Steph (aka Galaxipi) for the contest idea, as well as everyone else who payed attention to the forum thread.

We're all friends around here and v-day is coming up, so Corey and I thought it might be a good time to bust out the first of the dedication mixes, you know, just to make everyone feel a little bit better about being a mixtape nerd.
The premise is simple: make a mix dedicated to a site member. Make a love mix to send to me or make a hate mix to send to Corey -- this one is completely open to interpretation. Go nuts.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 9' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Play by the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the two-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home a whopping 300 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.
That said, we'd prefer if you dedicated your mix to a site member, but if you simply can't make a good one, you may dedicate it to whoever you desire.

If you're anything like me, getting up at 5:30am in the morning to go to work is downright torturous. In fact getting out of bed any time before noon is challenging. I've learned over time that I need three things to make mornings less painful:
- Black coffee
- scalding shower
- A badass mixtape
Thusly, the theme of this contest will be 'music for mornings.' Interpret it as you will, but please adhere to the theme and try to make it personal. Your entry in this contest must follow the format indicated below.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 8' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Play by the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the two-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home a whopping 300 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.

We're changing things up a bit this time and breaking away from the "themed" mixtapes. Some of you may have seen this sort of mix before; if you have, it might have been referred to as a 'Frankenstein' mix. The staff at the Collective, however, are not afraid of their masculinity and thus we bring your our little twist: Mixtape Potpourri. Your entry in this contest must follow the format indicated below. Follow the track themes as strictly or as loosely as you want, but your tape must adhere to the following format or risk disqualification.
-Your Favorite Album Opener
-A Song About Animals
-A Song That Makes You Want To Commit A Felony
-A Song About Sex
-A Song Michael Bolton Should Cover
-The Worst Song In The World
-Wildcard: Your Guilty Pleasure
-"If Snoop Dogg's 'Doggystyle' Came Out In 1944"
-A Song < 2:00
-A Remix Better Than The Original
-A Song From The Last Record You Purchased
-A Song That References Video Games
-A Song With A Swear Word In The Title
-The Song That Got You Through High School
-Your Favorite Album Closer
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 7' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the two-weeks AND one day, the person holding the number one spot will take home 200 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.

Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the two-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home 200 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.

Biting on the mix style of once-triumphant mixtaper, Bootylicious, we've decided to blatently rip off one of his amazing mixes, for our latest contest.
The concept: A mix begins and ends with songs that are connected, in one way or another, by all the songs that fall between them.
Be creative, mix it up -- this is the ultimate forum to flex your useless, trivial music knowledge. The Collective will be watching.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 5' in all three keyword fields and activate it.

We're going to change things up a bit with this contest. Pay close attention to the rules because things are a little different this time around. You're going to have to make a choice between two of the most savage, ferocious and quite possibly most musical beings in the universe...
Robots VS Monsters
Which side will you choose? When you've decided, make a mix to prove to the rest of us which is superior. You may only enter one mix for this contest. If you submit a mix for both sides, you will be disqualified and will not be awarded anything.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 4 - Robots' or 'Mix Contest 4 - Monsters' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the four-weeks, the person holding the number one spot for EACH team will take home 200 points and a badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze. COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest XXII: The Alternate Soundtrack

Yeah! That's the idea: Craft a tape of songs that have stood you personal 'test-of-time',

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest XIX: TIMETRAVEL

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest XVIII: HOLIDAZE.

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest XV: Weddings and funerals.

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest XIV: ROADTRIP2007!

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest XII: THE SEVEN YEAR MIX.
Every participant for the team with the highest
average mixtape score will earn 100 points and a badge in honor of their efforts.
So, get to it. NOW!

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest XI: BLOODONTHEDANCEFLOOR
NOW!

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest X: 2393

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest IX: Dedications I
We're all friends around here and v-day is coming up, so Corey and I thought it might be a good time to bust out the first of the dedication mixes, you know, just to make everyone feel a little bit better about being a mixtape nerd.

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest VIII: Morning Music

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest VII: Mixtape Potpourri

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest VI: Sexual Feelings
Eric and I are quickly running out of contest ideas, so thankfully Galaxiepi answered our call and gave us a great one.
We want you to exercise your sexual demons and share with us a mix full of lust and passion. You can go downright dirty, or maybe take a classy route. It's up to you.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 6' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the two-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home 200 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest V: n degrees of separation
Biting on the mix style of once-triumphant mixtaper, Bootylicious, we've decided to blatently rip off one of his amazing mixes, for our latest contest.
The concept: A mix begins and ends with songs that are connected, in one way or another, by all the songs that fall between them.
Be creative, mix it up -- this is the ultimate forum to flex your useless, trivial music knowledge. The Collective will be watching.
To participate in the contest, simply create your mixtape putting 'Mix Contest 5' in all three keyword fields and activate it.
Adhere to the rules, as the winner will be determined by the votes of the Collective. At the end of the two-weeks, the person holding the number one spot will take home 200 points and the badge, with smaller bonuses and badges for silver and bronze.
Happy mixtaping!

COMPLETED!: Mixtape Contest IV: Ultimate Showdown
Every participant for the team with the highest average mixtape score will earn 50 points and a badge in honor of their efforts.
Happy mixtaping!
