You ever listen to some music and think it just sounds old? I'm not talking 50's, 60's old... I'm talking 7th century, chock full of raping and pillaging, mead drinking, and pagan god worship. Well, uh, I do.

This is probably the product of having a vivid imagination and listening to way too much black metal over the years, but seriously, some songs just 'bring me back' to the good ole days.

This is a collection of those special songs.

Track 1 from Monumension
Length: 00:07:58
Year: 2001
Track Description:
This is the song that hooked me onto Enslaved over six years ago. Most all black metal is neo-classically based, both in melody choice and in rhythm. These guys have always gone a different route though, stemming more from the tones of 60's and 70's prog rock. Anyway, sorry for the tangent, just had to take a moment to support a band that no one else seems to like.

Anyway, this song is a perfect album opener. The opening sucks you in with a lush effects-laden guitar riff, before delving into distorted rhythms.

The meat of this song is mid-tempo chug with rigid drumming and raspy vocals. If dark age-era Norway had electric guitars, these guys would be the headlining act at the Great Hall while celebrating another successful raid.

The song ends on a mellow exploration of the first idea. This will lead us perfectly into the next song.

Track 2 from The Mantle
Length: 00:14:45
Year: 2002
Track Description:
Agalloch is one of those great "hidden" bands that no one knows about...probably because they are from Portland.

Anyway, on both of their full lengths, they tap into some strange, primeval force. After listening for awhile, you swear you're sitting around a campfire in the cold fog-covered Norwegian woods. Seriously, it sounds corny, but everyone I know that has given this album a good listen agrees.Anyway, this track is long, slow-paced and comprised mostly of acoustic guitar. It's folk feel combined with both subdued clean singing and raspy vocals make it a perfect candidate for this mix.

Track 3 from Jakten's Tid
Length: 00:03:16
Year: 2001
Track Description:
So, anyone that hasn't heard Finntroll is missing out. While a good majority of their music is gimmicky, it is still something that has to be heard at least once. The tongue-in-cheek nature of their music doesn't make them any less pertinent to this mix. The use of native Finnish rhythms and synthesized accordian make this track a drunken scandinavian hoedown of a good time.

Track 2 from Black One
Length: 00:05:56
Year: 2005
Track Description:
While I have a difficult time getting into any drone music, this song is awesome, and absolutely perfect for this mix.The extremely slow pacing and dark nature of the track make it a perfect halfway point for the mix.

Plus, after following Finntroll, the contrast is immense and reminds us that every roaring party still has a vocalist who records while inside a coffin to get just that right sound.

Track 1 from Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
Length: 00:04:18
Year: 1997
Track Description:
Despite being one of the quieter Emperor songs, this track sounds downright evil. Conjured spirits and sacrificial lambs unite!

This track serves to slowly bring up the intensity from our mid-cd lull in order to pave way for true chaos. Awesome.

Track 6 from The Sham Mirrors
Length: 00:05:08
Year: 2002
Track Description:
Arcturus, being a conglomeration of styles with an electronic vibe, wouldn't typically a good candidate for this mixtape. However, this track is full of tasty black metal goodness.

Featuring Ihsahn from Emperor on vocals, I figured it'd be a natural progression from the previous track. Plus, the keyboard playing is absolutely amazing, and while I'm not a fan of keyboards...these ones are worth the praise.

Track 8 from Sons of Northern Darkness
Length: 00:08:07
Year: 2003
Track Description:
Okay, any informed viewers out there knew this was coming. How can you have any sort of viking inspired mix without including these guys. They dress in viking gear for christ's sake! Anyway, despite the fact that they got a bad rap for their appearance, their music is pretty solid.

Being the last track, on their last album...I decided to have it be the last track on my mix. The drawn-out ending is pretty powerful and serves as a perfect contrast to the mix opener.
