Track 0 from Direct Hits
Length: 00:03:07 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
I probably shouldn't even have mentioned this song, but this is the whole reason I made this mix. Their rough demos for their latest CD sound really focused, with particularly biting lyrics this time around. It has a strong hook, and it's hard to tell it's in this revolving odd time feel the whole song. They're by no means a straight-ahead band, but it feels like they really feel comfortable in their style nowadays. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
What isn't there to like about Jawbreaker? I'm really surprised more people aren't listening to them, because they have written some of the most powerful songs in rock music; they definitely don't get the credit they deserve. SHOW LESS

Track 5 from Cough
Length: 00:03:14 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
This is about as intense as this mix gets. The odd breakdown section that pops up after the falsetto a cappela really propels this song as something resembling a club banger. Honestly, Black Eyes were the first true Dischord band to out-crunk Southern commercial rap. People just won't realize it until 20 years from now. SHOW LESS

Track 8 from Lord Willin'
Length: 00:04:14 Year: 0000 |
|
Track Description:
This is about as openly Neptunes-y as Lord Willin' gets (thankfully.) The verses are actually pretty solid, especially the wordplay in the first verse, but the chorus almost ruins it for me at first. Eventually, I'm able to tune it out. Either way, I know it's no "Gangsta Lean" and I don't take it that way, but it definitely has some smirk-worthy lines. The production is smooth, and frankly, it flows great from Black Eyes into Cocteau Twins. I really need to check out Hell Hath No Fury. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
Cocteau Twins's "Treasure" is definitely a CD designed for night driving. I've heard that the band really didn't like this release much in retrospect (also they performed "Pandora" occasionally live) but I find it one of my favorite. Really, I've never met anyone who dislikes Cocteau Twins; I don't think it's possible. SHOW LESS

Track 10 from No Heroes
Length: 00:02:18 Year: 2006 |
|
Track Description:
Jacob Bannon's clean vocals keep on getting more human. This song is ridiculously catchy, in a very Murder City Devils or even a Les Savy Fav sort of way. With this album, I really think they have more openly expressed their influences (and even groups Kurt records when Converge is on hiatus), from Gospel to Led Zeppelin (really!), without flinching or hiding behind the new-school metallic hardcore curtain they did a big part in creating. They really transcend their own tags like nobody's business each time they release something new. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
I like how all that separates bar rock bands from sounding somewhat like Electric Wizard are the tendency for bar rock bands to write crappy songs with crappy chords. Although honestly, I think Electric Wizard could do Nickelback covers and make them sound heavy. SHOW LESS

Track 4 from Sincerely
Length: 00:02:21 Year: 2006 |
|
Track Description:
With Disappear Here, End of a Year seemed uncontrollably anxious. With Sincerely, they feel a lot more comfortable...or so they claim. "Darnel" is exceptionally forward-propelled, complete with the background vocals that remind me of early Ween songs. This band is probably the most abused by my mix CDs, but for good reason. Track Description:
Versoma has always been iffy with me. I mean, they're on Robotic Empire, so they have to be good, but how good are they, really? Are they the next El Terran? This song really does it for me, even at that slowdown spot where it lets up just enough to get one's bearings. I just wish it went crazy there, but hey, artistic license. SHOW LESS

Aha! This might be total guilty pleasure territory, but I really like this CD, even though I'm probably not supposed to. This is most likely the first case of metalcoresy screaming on the CD to this point, and it's been known to put me off a bit. However, I still don't skip over it in the mix. SHOW LESS

Track 8 from Heavy Rocks
Length: 00:03:53 Year: 2002 |

Track Description:
Of all their CDs, Heavy Rocks is probably the most consistently rocking. Feedbacker will always hold a special place in my heart, and Pink definitely has its moments (not to downplay the rest of their extensive discography), but Heavy Rocks really has some of the most undeniably catchy songs they've ever released. Besides, every mix CD needs a little room to have fun. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
This song is definitely Braid in the sense that it sounds little like the rest of their catalogue. It's not nearly as endearing as most songs off of, say, Frame and Canvas, but it definitely has a hook that sticks. If only more local powerpop bands ripped off Braid instead of whatever crap is big nowadays. SHOW LESS

Length: 00:02:05 Year: 2003 |

Track Description:
This is way before they started sounding epic with floorpunch sections. Not to say that they ever did music that sounds like Donnybrook or anything, but this was a lot more fast-paced and anxious than the Mihai Edrisch I am accustomed to, the guy who gives a little more breathing room to make the riffs even more punishing. Too bad they've broken up forever. SHOW LESS

There's just something about a band this old and respected playing a fairly analog song that oddly sounds like a newer Trail of Dead song. Don't get me wrong, the bridge is dandy and all, but it's hard to tell it's New Order, especially if Bernard Sumner wasn't on vocals. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
This is one of those exceptional post-rocky tracks that can just make all the momentum of the day suddenly stop. It's something like the ultimate movie soundtrack, although equally complimenting real life like no one's business. This is as much an emphasis of the situation as background music, especially when it builds up to its guitar-driven climax, which is comparably jagged and rough. SHOW LESS

There's no reason anyone should diss DOOM. I believe he has something resembling the perfect flow, and his production is spot-on. Even though it takes about 2 minutes just to get into the verse (sounding a bit deer-in-the-headlights at first) but it's worth it, spinning wordplay like punches from a seasoned boxer. SHOW LESS

It's powerful and vulnerable at the same time, with a slight vibrato that feels like her voice is going to crack any second, Tim Kinsella-style. She just sounds intimidating, like she's rebuking some worthless dude who messed with her one time too often. SHOW LESS

Track Description:
The three movements of Wuorinen's Percussion Symphony are split up by the unusually tonal Entr'actes, based on previously-written works by various 19th century composers. The edges of tonality are still bent with this work, using prepared piano and some excellent marimba playing to prepare the listener for the atonal madness that is the third movement of the Percussion Symphony.
