This CD is a commemorative album from the Italy and London trip that Kerrie and I made in the summer of 2006. We were in Italy for the wedding of our good friends Mona & Steve, which took place on Lake Como. We spent the next two weeks touring around Italy. These were the songs that marked that journey…

This is a great song to start the trip. I was playing this one to Kerrie in the plane from Toronto to London. Mind you, she may not remember as she was high off of a double dose of Gravol to ensure that she was passed out for the duration of the flight.

A song from a playlist of British tunes I had that we listened to on the plane. I threw it on here because, well we pretty much ate toast every morning, and there’s that great part “I’m going to think about it… doot doot doot doot doot doot doooo.”

Track Description:
We could not get away from this tune in Italy! Everywhere we went, people were singing it. Old men in train stations, groups of kids on the beach in Cinque Terre, women in shops… And it was ALWAYS on the radio – well, a modified version. It was rather unnerving. Then we found out it was the World Cup song for Italy, and they were still suffering from World Cup Fever when we were there.

Track 8 from Old songs for a new town
Length: 00:04:05
Year: 2005
Track Description:
After a very long flight to London, lunch with our friends Steve & Meghan who were visiting London from Scotland for the day, a train to Stansted Airport and flight to Bergamo, Kerrie & I make our way to the HI hostel we booked for that night. We took the bus into the city centre, and then found out that the buses weren’t running anymore, so we had to walk about 5km up a hill, then up a flight of 200 stairs to the hostel. We were sweaty (I was a little scared as we were walking through completely deserted streets, and every house had their shutters drawn, so you could hardly see any light, and then there was a bunch of graffiti around. Kerrie was much braver than me), anyways, we arrive after 1am, dripping with sweat (which was an accurate description of us for the entire trip!) only to find that they gave away the 2 beds we booked in the all female dorm! They only had 2 beds left, in a “mixed dorm” and when Kerrie inquired “how mixed” the answer was 6 men & us. Oh. So we ended up creeping into this dorm in the middle of the night, to find 6 sweaty men in tighty whities splayed all over their bunks. And of course, I can’t work the lock on the locker, and one of the guys got up to help, and then I proceeded to wake up the rest of the room as I climbed up to the ladder to the top bunk. Kerrie had to remove the ladder to get up to her bunk (on the other side of the room) so I was stuck until she rescued me in the morning. I’m sure the 6 men were surprised to find us there the next morning. Anyways, it was a hot sweaty night and the next day, we snuck into another room to shower. As Kerrie walked out – clean & non-sweaty at last – the “hallelujah” section of this song was playing! Tee hee! She wanted to know if that was a hint.

Track 0 from Moseley Shoals
Length: 00:03:06
Year: 1996
Track Description:
On day two we visited Bergamo City Alto, then caught a train to Milan where we met our friend Christie who was also heading to the wedding. I don’t remember if we ran for the train to Milan, but we certainly ran to catch the Como train – which was the first of many forms of transportation that Kerrie and I had to run for. I don’t quite know which was my favourite: running completely lost through the maze of Venice to catch the last boat back to our campsite, or that time in Rome when we were running through the train station and I nearly took out a group of Boy Scouts. What can I say, there was a gap between the leader and the group, and I thought I could fit. Actually, that moment was totally reminiscent of the time when Kerrie, Andrea, and I were in Vegas for our friend Dillon’s wedding when we found out – 5 minutes before the service – that we were on the complete opposite side of the Caesar’s Palace then we were supposed to! Not good. We ended up running through the casino in high heels and party dresses while screaming for people to get of our way, ducking transfixed seniors playing slots and waitresses with trays of free drinks. We made it there just before the wedding party walked down the aisle. As the best man said, “un-be-lievable”

Track 0 from Faithlift
Length: 00:03:52

Track Description:
Ahhh, Venice. Venice was an interesting city. It was so ridiculously hot and crowded – but that serves us right for traveling through Europe in August. Actually that would be Mona’s fault for having her wedding then.

I found it hard to be in Venice, and not only because it’s damn near impossible to navigate the streets. Venice has this incredible past, a wealthy past, a noble past, but that’s just it, it’s in the past. There are so many gorgeous buildings, but a lot of the city has suffered from neglect. And really, how do you maintain so many buildings that are centuries old that are sitting on/in salt water? Don’t take me wrong, Venice is still a gorgeous city, but you can just read how spectacular it must have been during its heyday. What made being in Venice particularly hard for me was that the place was overrun with tourists – ourselves included. And tourism seemed to be something that Venice resorted to begrudgingly. But because of the hordes of people, it felt less like a city, and more like a theme park. Venice just felt like a beautiful, old society lady who was now broke and resorting to prostitution to survive. It was slightly depressing.

Thankfully we caught an early boat in the next morning and saw how the city functioned. We saw commuters, garbage removal, food delivery, and even a few funeral barges. That unearthed the fact that Venice was a city, people called it there home, and I was able to enjoy it a lot more because of that.

Another tune for Venice.

Oh, another frustration with Venice is that we met this whiney Canadian from Montreal who we couldn’t get rid of all day. He had had a big fight with his traveling partners so they split apart, and I totally see why! He was so aggravating, didn’t like anything, and was super negative. Argh!

Here’s a funny Venice moment: standing with a million other people, waiting for the “bus-boat” thing, when another “bus-boat” thing goes by, and who is standing on that bus-boat thing but our friend Christie who we had left 2 days before! It was random, and hysterical!

All over Italy, we kept seeing “Dolce&Gabbana” clothes, sunglasses, bags, and the like. Either being sold in makeshift “white sheet” markets, or being worn by beautiful people. Whenever we saw a D&G, we started singing this song. And we did get a kick out of the fact that in London, they call traffic bumps “humps.”

Track 0 from album
Length: 00:03:19
Year: 0000
Track Description:
The night before the wedding, we were up at the Hotel Aurora having dinner. There were two rowdy parties next to us. One of which was a table of Mona’s crazy aunts (they are so much fun!), and the other was “I’m Michael!” - a dentist from one of the towns around there who was at the hotel to celebrate his friend’s birthday. During one point of the evening, which included a conga line, a rousing version of YMCA, and a bullfighter-bull mock battle between Mona’s aunts and Michael, Michael was enthusiastically singing along to Quando, Quando, Quando.

This song is also on here as a nod to the two Italian boys we met during dinner one night in Rome. After drinking lemoncello along the banks of the Tiber River later that evening (picture that outside dance party in Roman Holiday), we were walking up the stone steps and attempting to tell them that “Quando Quando Quando” is not a song that would be cool in Canada. They had a hard time believing that. “No??”

Track Description:
This song kind of reminds me of the Colosseum at 3am after being locked out of our lesbian hostel (which we didn’t realize was a lesbian hostel until we got there). Long story and one that requires me to be supplied with a lot of beer before you hear it… It was the same lemoncello evening.

Another funny random Colosseum moment: earlier that day, Kerrie and I standing at the Colosseum attempting an-extend-your-arm-out self-portrait with the mammoth structure in the background – no small feat, even with Kerrie’s long arms. Then we hear, “Oh just let me do it!” And there, standing in the sun, was Christie! We knew she was in Rome some time around when we were going to be there, but didn’t know when. That girl shows up when you least expect her.

Track 1 from Curious George
Length: 00:03:04
Year: 2006
Track Description:
This song was all over the place in Italy. It reminds me of trying on clothes in Florence. We were only in Florence for one day, and there were so many people that we couldn’t get into anything we wanted to see. So we pouted. We pouted a lot.

We pouted trying to find cafe in the morning.

We pouted trying to cross the Ponte Vecchio with a sea of people – most of which were remotely connected by earpiece to their guide who were carrying sunflowers so you didn’t get lost.

We pouted at the 3 hour line up outside the Uffize.

We pouted at the ostentatious display of wealth at the Pitti Palace. (Mind you we giggled at all the penis-less male statues. Damn! Missed opportunity! I should have put King Missile’s detachable penis on this cd!).

We pouted because we saw the copy of the statue of David and not the original.

We pouted eating Gelato outside the Duomo.

Then we decided we had pouted enough and we should just go shopping. There is very good shopping in Florence - especially leather items and especially the street markets. I don’t believe I didn’t buy a leather coat! I suppose it was about 35 degrees out, which makes one think more of eating gelato than trying on suffocating leather jackets.

Track Description:
This song from a friend’s band is the perfect closer for this cd. It refers to the road that links the suburbs to the airport in Ottawa. I think the pensive undertone of the slow driving beat captures that transitional moment where the magic of where you were dissipates into the everyday. It’s reflective and bittersweet and hence, a good closer to a commemorative cd about a trip.
