description:
My task was clear. Subvert the latest competition a little with my entry whilst broadly staying within the rules. I decided a few days ago that if the threatened potpourri contest emerged then I would try and come up with a theme of my own to run through the whole thing. There was only one solution...The return of the thin white duke...

I know, I have transgressed many of the unwritten rules of MTC and must forfeit my life as recompense. As I am led manfully to Madame Le Guillotine I will happily reflect that I spent a very happy two hours putting this together!

Track 1 from Station to Station
Length: 00:10:13
Year: 1976
Track Description:
Station To Station is a shockingly great album, and this is a cracking if lengthy opener. All the elements of what had made Bowie great up to that point are there as it combines a naive third generation take on R&B, lyricism with a hint of the Germanic iciness to come during the Low/Heroes period.

Track 8 from Diamond Gods Interpretations Of Bowie (Various Artists)
Length: 00:04:13
Year: 0000
Track Description:
A song the Wu Tang Clan would make fun of... This represented the hardest category to fit in with my theme, but I am hoping that the MTC Gods smile on me and my humble efforts. Hip Hop and rap in general is my blind spot. My obsession with guitars has been one of the reasons for this. So, I have included one of the few songs associated with DB that EVERYONE would be prepared to make fun of. This version is particularly odd, sung as it is by one time UK ska singer Bloodvessel. I end this cop out by suggesting that Bowie's Wu Tang name be 'Beautiful Old Wanker In England'.

Track Description:
A song used in a TV commercial ... This song has been used in numerous TV commercials. It was re-released in the UK and actually got the the lower reaches of the charts in the late 90s after being used in an ad for Toyota cars. Our boy Dave was in the production chair for this one.

A song where the title of the song doesn't occur in the lyrics of said song... This was the first Bowie song I thought of that qualified, and as this was something I liked but couldn't ever see using on any other mix, I looked no further!

Track 1 from Tin Machine II
Length: 00:03:18
Year: 1991
Track Description:
A song by a two hit wonder... If we bend the category to include bands with two album releases only which charted, (and once upon a time when the music industry was still alive, to chart was to have a hit) then we can include Tin Machine. I saw them in a small West London venue and thought they were pretty great actually!

Track 2 from Aladdin Sane
Length: 00:05:06
Year: 1973
Track Description:
A song your parents would probably disapprove of... No question about this. They did! It is 1973, I am sixteen years old, worrying the heck out of my parents for the usual reasons that kids worry their parents over. They had this unfailing knack of walking past my bedroom door just as stuff that would send them into a real rage would play. Just about anything I played would do that, but this was different. As my Dad spied on me, he heard the lyric, "flexing like a whore, she falls wanking to the floor..." This prompted the angriest one sided "I won't have that filth in my house" debate we ever had. As a coda to this, many many years later when my Dad was a mellowed out lovely old man, and I had done most of the things my parents feared of but had mostly survived, he told me that he would have liked to have met David Bowie because he thought that he would be a fascinating person to have a cup of tea with. My Dad has had his cool moments.

Year: 1976
Track Description:
a song that references the internet/computers...Yes I know, not only do I have the same artist several times, but I have dipped into the same album twice on the same mixtape. I am a bad person. Meanwhile, this jolly story of a Tv that eats people MUST be a prophetic view into the future from 1975 where Dave can see that the successor to Tv, the net, consumes the heart, minds and souls of impressionable young people, not to mention impressionable middle aged people too!

Length: 00:05:06
Year: 1994
Track Description:
guilty pleasure wild card...I have always known that liking Lulu was not funny, it wasn't clever, and I shouldn't do it, but I always have. Her work with Bowie was probably the hippest she ever got, but all things are relative. I just read today that Lulu's 'To Sir With Love' was the most successful US single of 1967. When you think of the stuff put out that year, the words 'fuck me' spring to mind!
