description:
I attended high school from 1993-1997. There were some classic hip hop albums that came out during that time. This mix, however, is NOT a listing of classic songs off those albums. Some songs here are considered classic by some people, yes, but that doesn't matter. I liked this stuff then, and I still like it now.

All of the songs on the mixtape, in addition to being cool songs, bring back cool memories/emotions for me. The middle part of the mix tapes a little detour down love/relationship lane-- whether the subject is music or girls. For some reason, whenever applicable, I've always ended my tapes or cd's with the Souls of Mischief cut that I do here.

Track 5 from World Ultimate
Length: 00:03:30
Year: 1995
Track Description:
This song causes uncontrollable head nod. Be forewarned. Classic Los Angeles underground duo (rip Yusef Afloat). I didn't know what I was getting into when I bought this album from Columbia House (music club) back in high school. Columbia House at the time (don't know about these days) always seemed to carry some lesser known stuff. So instead of opting for the popular albums I could buy anywhere, I took chances on things I had never heard of. Some panned out, some didn't. This one DID! It wasn't until I moved down to California for college that I realized who The Nonce really was, but MAN, when I put this song on, sitting on my living room floor while in high school, I almost jumped through the roof. I was so happy to have bought this album. The bassline and the bells... and then when the drums kick in... oh boy. You can find the video to "Mix Tapes" on YouTube. Check it out!

Track Description:
Smooth/mellow/bouncy song from Casual (of the Oakland-based Hieroglyphics crew). I borrowed this tape from a friend my sophmore year, and got addicted to this song. I liked how he goes up every now and then on the word 'you.' Good song for a sunny day.

This came out the summer before my freshman year. I saw the video on Yo! MTV Raps and recorded it to cassette tape via the TV's external mono speaker. Bouncy, boombastic, jazz-infused early 90's NYC hip hop. The whole album.

Oh man, the bass on this song. Turn it up! Just sum ol' west coast, Long Beach gangsta funk. Great for a sunny day in the car. This came out the summer before my junior year and I can't remember who I borrowed the CD from... only that somehow I dubbed it to cassette. "you can stare all daaayy, but just don't step, on my blue suede shoes, to get here i paid dues..." I went to the store just the other day on a sunny Sunday and put this on repeat. The whole way there and back.

Great smooth head-nodder, produced by the one and only Jay Dee, aka J Dilla (rip). I was riding around in my friend's car on Halloween night the first time I heard this song. I was in the back of a little hatchback VW (I'm 6'7"--- my 6'8" friend had shotgun). I think he only had the single; I don't think the whole album was out quite yet. Had to pick it up after hearing this one.

I love this song. And this album. I feel like the album didn't get much attention. The previous year I was hearing "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)"-- off their first album-- on the radio all the time. While this album (Blowout Comb) was different, I always liked it better as a whole. This track is soo smooth. Also a definite highlight to me in high school was track #7 on the album, "Dial 7 (Axioms Of Creamy Spies)". Please check out this whole album. Worth your listening time.

Year: 1996
Track Description:
They're in a submarine in the video. You gotta like that. You gotta like Enya, too. I was a junior when I heard this first. Some friends and I went to McDonald's on the lunch break at school. We were waiting in line and some other friends pulled up. One of the guys pulls me out of line and says "you gotta hear this." We have a seat in his parked car and he puts on "Ready or Not". YEAH. Tight song. I had to buy it that day. He then put on "Killing Me Softly" but it just wasn't doing it for me. I think we played this track 2 or 3 times, and I never got lunch that day. But after school I headed to the only place in town that carried the album, and it was the edited version. But I didn't care; had to get it.

Length: 00:02:33
Year: 1994
Track Description:
It's hard for me to pick a single track off this album, because I listened to the WHOLE tape all the way through so many times. I wore out the clarion deck with this tape. Highly slept-on 1994 release from these 4 from the Boogie Down. Some call this a CLASSIC. I don't disagree. While this track ("Muzik...") doesn't highlight the whole crew, it's one that I loved cruising around on a warm day to. A love song to music, in the same vein as Common (Sense)'s classic track. Do yourselves a favor and listen to some Boogiemonsters!

Length: 00:02:23
Year: 1995
Track Description:
This song is crazy. High energy. I convinced my same friend who played me "Runnin'" to buy this CD (he had a bunch of CD's to pick out for joining Columbia House). We didn't know who he was (of course, I learn later that it's Milk Dee from the old school group Audio Two), and the album cover was crazy: a broken glass milk bottle with blood on the sharp edges. So he bought it. When he finally got it in the mail, he brought it in to school and we played it. CRAZY. There's also a song with Ad Rock from the Beastie Boys, "Spam", which we also liked. But this was the one to start things off! "Check what I say, what I say is true..." This song will probably make you laugh.

Track Description:
Technically, this album came out at the end of my 8th grade year in 2003, but I really didn't start listening to it (that I remember) until my freshman year in high school. This girl that I asked to the homecoming dance had the cassette, and I borrowed it from her. She was acting like she liked me-- she even had her friend come up to me to try and get me to ask her to go-- so I kind of associate this song with that time. BUT THEN, after the dance, I find out that she doesn't really like me; she likes this junior instead, and she just used me to go to the dance. To make his jealous or something. So when I found THAT out, I played the next song on this mixtape for her...

Big L is underrated, but didn't get his full time to shine. He's got punchlines, delivery, everthing. His lyrics are right in your face. He's a lot of people's favorite emcee of all time. My friend bought this CD and brought it into the art class we had together, I think my junior year. This was his only real album before he died. If you haven't heard it, get it. I always liked the tempo of this track and the jazzy little hook.

Track 7 from Presents the Carnival Featuring the Refugee Allstars
Length: 00:04:18
Year: 1997
Track Description:
This album came out at the end of my senior year, and my high school career. I was dating a girl at the time, and we'd been dating for a couple years. Apparently there was this OTHER girl who also liked me, but I didn't pay this supposed other girl any attention. But to have a little good-natured fun with my girlfriend, I told her that this track was my theme song, and that I really felt where Wyclef was coming from. It was funny then to get a reaction out of her-- and she knew that I was just giving her a hard time, but it still bothered her. The ironic part of the story comes when I'm about to head off to college... I actually break up with my then-girlfriend, and then start hanging out with this OTHER girl who I've never really hung out with before, and who I find out actually did/does like me. And then I end up dating THAT girl for a few years after I head off to college. Looking back, I wish I hadn't have treated the first girlfriend that way, because she's cool. Oh well. And anyway, I like the sonic quality of this song. It sounds like it was done on an E-mu SP1200. There's a slight ring mod to the samples, and having owned a few SP's over the years, it's just got that gritty sound. I like the vocals/melody and guitar over the SP layer.

Track Description:
This song is so fresh. Meaning every time I hear it, it's almost like hearing it for the first time. I love the reference to the SP-12 (the sampling drum machine from E-mu) and "reel-to-reel" (tape deck)... "we gets freaky in the studio late night." It wasn't until I actually started using an SP-12 & 1200 and learning about pro recording studios that I learned this was referring to staying up all hours in the studio recording and making songs/beats. I first heard this in a mini van with some bball teammates on the way to a practice. Someone had a mixtape with this track on it. I loved it. I then remember going to my friend's house after school-- he had these huge speakers-- and we'd play this real loud before his mom would get home.

Track 2 from The Coming
Length: 00:04:00
Year: 1996
Track Description:
I feel like I'm out at sea on a pirate ship or something when I listen to this song. You got the steady motion of the bassline and drums... and then you've got Busta's crazy lyrical style: the way he fluctuates on certain lines and phrases, and then fills in crazy ad-libs-- it's like he's a drunken pirate walking around on an unstable ship deck reciting lyrics, bumping into the mast, etc.-- and all this motion dictates what comes out of his mouth. It's different. It's Busta. It's tight! Of course the popular song on this album is "Wooh Hah!! Got You All in Check" and I played that one as well, but "Do My Thing" gets my vote. I helped produce a student tv news show my junior and senior, and we used little pieces off this album for our intro/segue music TOO much!

Track Description:
There are 3 songs on this album that I really listened to a lot in high school: 'The Traveler', 'Lifesaver', and 'Looking Through the Darkness'. What I like about this ("The Traveler") is that when I listen to it, I do get the sense of movement. The bassline is steady moving and the horn sometimes feels meandering, but when the chorus/hook kicks in, it's like you're off to a new location. These three songs that I mentioned got played a lot at night. I remember going to a friend's house and his parents were away for the weekend, and this house was out in the woods, so there was no light. We put this CD on the sound just filled the whole house. Horns echoing kinda mysteriously, but cool.
