description:
When 2000 was fast approaching Playboy magazine asked various people to list their songs of the Millenium. Richard Thompson took this task literally, and compiled a list of music covering the previous thousand years. Needless to say, Playboy did not publish his fascinating list, although Thompson did get to perform many of the songs on it in several concerts that were recorded and later released! Anyway, I do plan to tackle music from the 20th Century in this mix. My aim this time is to create a mix that travels through the Century taking in a variety of musical styles along the way. I won't be starting from the early 1900's, as my music collection starts from about the late 1920's. I will take it from there up to 2000 though. Fasten your seatbelts, we are in for a bumpy ride!

Track 13 from Ken Burns Jazz:The Story Of America's Music (Disc 1)
Length: 00:02:53
Year: 2000
Track Description:
This is of course the music of the 20th Century that I am interested in, so Louis Armstrong seems as good a place to start as any. With very old recordings like this one, sound quality is a factor, but despite the ancient recording techniques, this just jumps out of the speakers full of life.

Year: 1986
Track Description:
The queen of the blues. I don't listen to this stuff that much anymore. Playing this again makes me realise that is a mistake. Her voice bugs the shit out of me, in a very good way. It is double entendre heaven here as Bessie leaves us knowing exactly what it is she wants!

Track Description:
The legend of Robert Johnson is a lot of fun, but it is the actual recorded legacy that treally counts. A haunting voice, wonderful guitar playing, sexually explicit lyrics, ("You can squeeze my lemon till the juice runs down my legs") all there in the 1930's!

Track 9 from 1939-1940 (Disc 2)
Length: 00:03:54
Year: 0000
Track Description:
If the 20th Century means anything to me, apart from the century I probably will have spent most of my life in, it has to be that it was the time that spawned the electric guitar. Charlie Christian played guitar with a pick-up, long before the first solid body came along. Enough talk. This still sounds bloody great!

Length: 00:02:24
Year: 0000
Track Description:
Now I have to say first of all that I detest this artist, but love this one recording, made in the late 50's, a very rare example of a genuine UK fifties rock record. The Hank B Marvin guitar part on this is wonderful. Cliff though...Well, it is hard for someone not from the UK to understand my utter contempt for this person. I will leave it for another day! For now though, I will mention that this was the first of his UK hits, and he has had to date well over 100 more. Depressing, isn't it.

Track 6 from Handsworth Revolution
Length: 00:05:39
Year: 1978
Track Description:
When punk was in full swing, Reggae was big in the UK as well. Steel Pulse were (are?) a British reggae band. I was at an open air show in 1978 in East London headlined by The Clash. We were at the back of the crowd, and inbetween bands I fell asleep for the usual reasons that people do at such gatherings. Steel Pulse had set up on the back of a truck, and had parked right where I was. I was rudely awakened to this song at full volume. You tend not to forget stuff like that!

Track 2 from Time Out of Mind

Track Description:
Dylan appears near the end of the century as he was one of the figures that dominated it. Like me, he had a near death experience. For me, it meant sitting at home for four years hardly moving. For him, it meant recording his best album in a long time. The roots rock vibe on this album continues through to his latest stuff. Long live his Bobness!
