It's best if you don't. They're a pop-punk band from the 90s and I guess 00s that specialize in irritating, ill-composed songs about love and heartache. The singer has a nasal vocal range and ... ugh, I'm sorry for revealing this information

Thank you for keeping contact with my MTC profile, has Seasick Steve recorded much?

I fell out of love with the blues for a while, now I think I'm back in again.
He does more with three strings than I could ever hope to do with six.

I haven't constructed a fully cohesive mixtape since June, and I've missed out on the past three (four?) contests. So I guess I already have left. I'm working on a behemoth double-mixtape which will hopefully be done before Christmas, if it's done by then I'll upload it to the MTC.

Of course God would spend all his/her/it's time on MTC! As for Meester Young, I have been revisiting Buffalo Springfield stuff recently.

I went through this craze about a year ago of trying to find all the different live versions of down by the river from all phases of his career that I could. There is a great TV version on youtube from CSNY and there was an even better version by them from the Big Sur folk fest but that doesn't seem to be up there anymore.

I highly doubt the God thing, if I were a God I wouldn't be spending my time on the MTC.

And yes, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is definitely grunge or proto-grunge or whatever you want to call it. I've been listening to a lot of Neil Young lately.

I'd read what you'd written about John Martyn before, and I found two of his videos on YouTube, but I can't find anything else from this guy. Everything's gone digital now, the nearest decent record store is about thirty minutes driving distance, and I've resorted to using iTunes as a way of managing music. I hope I'll be able to find one or two of his CDs, the way he plays his acoustic with the Echoplex is just unbelievable.

Battles, I will seek that out. I had a friend called Paul Battles who had a withered hand, but that has nothing to do with anything. Modern and sounding like Tago Mago. That sounds made for me. In return, I will recomend something very old, the album "Inside Out" by John Martyn. Jazzy bluesy incomprehensible in places and very very wonderful! Martyn used most of the band Traffic as session guys on this, plus Danny Thompson on standup bass. In part it is inspired by his hero Pharoah Saunders. Not easy listening, but among the best albums I have ever heard. It is available in an expanded version these days, and that is the one to get.

"it is not always a good idea to meet your heroes!"

Truer words have never been spoken.

And as to the music (or rather, noise) I recorded, keep in mind that it's tounge-in-cheek. Almost. Though I rather enjoy playing the last track.

but to answer your question, back in the day I talked to Cave for about three minutes, and I can't remember what either of us said. I talked to him briefly at a book reading in Brighton, England around 1990, but I asked stupid questions, and he showed the politeness of a man selling a book. I have found that it is not always a good idea to meet your heroes!

I was in a lot of bands, the one I was in when we supported the Birthday Party was called Carbon, and was very short lived, I think we did twenty dates or less. Others included The Poorboys, The Reginald Simpson Trio (we were on the same bill as loads of Punk bands that were remembered where we were not) Leap Of Faith, F-Monster and many many more you will never have heard of. I have played on a few albums as session musician, and released some singles and EPs in differing guises. Now I am playing again, My blues band are doing a CD to sell at gigs, but the bass player and I are writing songs for an acoustic album. I am going to listen to your stuff later today by the way.

My friends here in the US think its funny to mention that I still talk of "WaxCylinders" Bastards!

Oh, and since this site is about sharing music, I would recommend the new Battles album, in particular, the song Atlas, because it reminds me of Can's Tago Mago and is very ... modern? Modern's a good word for it, I think.

Yeah, I use the words "album" and "film," even though I did not own an actual LP until about a year ago / watch motion pictures recorded onto digital cameras, not film.

And what band were you in? Did you ever meet Nick Cave?

Tech talk is only interesting when you're talking with a person who knows what you're talking about. I own an entry-level Fender Stratocaster (I bought the heaviest strings I could and tuned it down to Bb to make up for not knowing any bass players), a 1964 Gibson LG-0 acoustic (way overpriced, but it was definitely worth it), and a cheap Squier P-Bass (I couldn't help myself). And my first amp was a Line 6, too (the Spider II 15, I believe). Interesting.

One thing I love about this new amp (apart from the fact that it is light enough for the old man in me to carry and loud enough for the young punk in me to annoy people with) is that despite the high tech aspect of the whole thing (tons of pre sets modelling, etc) the speaker is a lovely 12" Celestion, pretty much the same as the 12" Celestion in that old AC30 I was rattling on about. What guitars do you play? I have a cheap Washburn Delta Blues King, a Gibson semi knock-off that is exceedingly playable, and which is working for me on stage. I do need to use heavy gauge strings with it, but the sound I get using them is bloody lovely. I am sorry if this veers into techie talk, I usually steer clear of that, and cite the quote "The English don't like music, they just like the sound it makes", but I have to say, I am pleased with this little monster.

It would do! I remember when I started playing, I bought a Vox AC30 and a Vox 'madolin' guitar, like the one Brian Jones played in the Stones. Even before I plugged it together, I just sat and looked at it for about an hour. Thre guitar played like shit actually, but the amp was nice!

I know what you mean by the "buying equipment" thing. Two days ago I picked up a Kay 1966 Galaxie I amp (transistor, not tube, alas), for a mere $45.44. I've proceeded to plug it into a karaoke machine with the "Echo" setting all the way up, which was plugged into a one-track tape recorder, which was plugged into a microphone which was directed at the amp, which was also plugged into the headphones of the tape recorder. Now I have a thirty-minute cassette tape of insane echo-y feedback noises and a pair of annoyed parents. But it cheered me up!

One of the positive (and hypothetically terrifying) aspects of the Mixtape Collective is I can see EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE DOING. So I saw your post to Spectacularview, and wanted to ask what you thought of Neutral Milk Hotel. Their best song just might be Two-Headed Boy, Pt. II, but I haven't heard everything from their back-catalogue so I can't say for sure.

Love the Citizen Kane thing. I have done some CD sleeve notes, reissues mostly, and I write for a UK based music mag now and then, but mostly I am working on the new book, doing a few musicians web sites, teaching guitar and now starting to gig again. It would be nice to be paid for doing mixtapes. Actually, last year, a guy back in England paid me to make up a multiple CD set of the top ten US singles on his birthday dating back to the mid fifties to the early eighties. I found it so hard not to leave the crap out and reprogram the whole thing. Mixtaping is addictive.

Here is the amazon link for the book I wrote with Dick Heckstall Smith. http://www.amazon.com/Bl owing-Blues-Personal-History-British/dp/1 904555047/sr=8-7/qid=1162769996/ref=sr_1_ 7/102-9602442-2231348?ie=UTF8&s=books In fact, it is a reprint of Dick's earlier book, 'The Safest Place In The World' but with a new 100 page second section and discography written by me. If you decided to get a used copy, make sure it has the CD with it. The CD is of mostly unreleased live material. Financial containts meant it was mastered on my computer, so the sound quality is not brilliant, but some of the music is. I am working on a new music book for June/July next year.
