description:
Here is a mix of people whose music has moved or influenced me, but who were never that well known even back in the day, let alone now. These people are worth hearing, at least once, anyway. Just to break things up, there are one or two more contemporary but obscurish acts who are the moobs of tomorrow. I got the idea after looking at sledgbrainerd's badass mix! This is part one, and that fact alone suggests a part 2 might be on the way.

tracklist

1 Kevin Coyne : House On The Hill
"I'm going to the house up on the hill, the place where they give you pills..." Kevin Coyne had been on both sides of the fence as far as mental instituitons go before he started making records, and his subject matter often dealt with insanity and the places where those deemed to be insane are put. He had a penetrating voice, as powerful as Joe Cocker, and his performances were awesome. He recorded for Virgin for some time, and there is still a fair bit of his material around.

2 Neal Casal : Today I'm Gonna Bleed
Neal Casal has been around for the past 12 years or so. I only heard about him via an alt.country compilation CD that came free with a Brit music mag. (Uncut) The quality of his singing and writing truly impresses me. He comes from California I believe, but I have yet to find a Californian who has heard of him. The disturbing lyrics are at odds with the melodic delivery. I like that.

3 Dr Strangely Strange : Strangely Strange But Oddly Normal
This is one of the most obscure tracks I know of. When I first started listening to music that frightened my mother, I found that there were some wild and wonderful things to be found on the Island label. This song sounds kind of folky with its acoustic guitars, flutes, etc, but once you get the idea that it is about very un-straight people trying to appear straight, it is actually very good.

4 Quintessence : Gungami
More late sixties hippy stuff from Island. If Santana had been Hindi, then they might have sounded like this. Extended jamming, lots of energy, and a singer with a suprisingly fantastic voice.

8 Roy Harper : When An Old Cricketeer Leaves The Crease
Another individual yet sorely neglected British singer songwriter. His vocal range and acoustic guitar playing put me in mind of Neil Young a little. His lyrics can often be cutting and political, yet this track borders on the sentimental as it uses the sport of cricket as an allegory for old age and death.

9 Clive Gregson : White Suit Of Notes
Around the time Elvis Costello was establishing himself, Clive Gregson was leading Manchester outfit Any Trouble. Solo now for many years, he makes intelligent music like this. One of those people whose songs are covered a lot, but who seems destined for small cult status only.

13 Piblokto! : Thousands On A Raft
Piblokto! was around in the very early 70s, and led by Pete Brown who is a poet, singer, writer amongst other things, best known for his writing partnership with Jack Bruce which produced classic rock songs such as White Room, Politician and Sunshine of Your Love. Brown sings on this, one of his best songs. Thousands on a raft alludes to the human struggle, and is also slang for the Brit breakfast meal of baked beans on toast.
