tracklist

1 The Beatles : While My Guitar Gently Weeps
I read today in Rolling Stone (yeah the old fart still reads Rolling Stone) of a Wu Tang Clan version of this coming soon, with John Frusciante and Danni Harrison on guitars! This tidbit kind of started the process that ends with this mix.

6 The Spotnicks : Johnny Guitar
I first discovered the Spotnicks when I was selling rare vinyl as a sideline in London 8 or 9 years back. They were a guitar instrumental band from an unlikely country such as Finland or Iceland or somewhere. They were at their 'peak' in the pre Beatles sixties, and their stage shows and album covers were graced by them wearing very silly spaceman outfits! The song is a cover of the theme tune of the shit/brilliant Western movie of the same name. Lovely.

7 Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappeli : Swing Guitars
The title doubles as a better description than I could give. Guitars that swing, or at least, a guyitar and violin that swing!

8 Bill Nelson : Ancient Guitars
Bill Nelson is an interesting case. If you ever get a chance to see him live (I don't even know if he still gigs) it could be pretty cool. I saw him around 2000. The day before the show, he made up some rudimentary backing tracks on the spot, new stuff. Then, he sent these tracks to a video production team who put together scratch videos to accompany the music. Then, he came onstage the following night with a stage full of guitars, keyboards, percussion. He then improvised (mostly on guitar) over the backing tracks while the videos played overhead. At the end of the evening, a CD with that evenings performance was ready to be sold. It could have been a mess, but it was bloody brilliant!

9 Tori Amos : Cars and Guitars
Not a guitar track, but all the better for it. A little Tori Amos instability is a very good thing!

10 Blue Oyster Cult : 5 Guitars
This however does have guitars in it. (Can you guess how many?) BOC got me through the cold dark days before punk in 1976 so I thank them for that.

12 Adrian Legg : Guitars & Other Cathedrals
Technically, Adrian Legg is probably the greatest player I have ever heard. He recently toured tiny venues in the USA. He played at a small club close to where I live, but the 60 buck cover kept me out. I have seen him in the UK though. He achieves the sounds he gets without all the electronic gadgets. He does it by de-tuning, string bending, etc. Someone told me his music has no revelance to the 21st century world we live in. Bollocks, skill, beauty and inspiration always have a part to play.

13 Ian McNabb : If Love Was Like Guitars
Pretty good Scottish singer/songwriter who had the nads to use Crazy Horse as his backing band a while back. Maybe Neil Young could reform the Revillos for his next tour!

Where would we be without the guitar. Still fussing over the wheel probably. Plus drugs wouldn't have been invented or something. And where would we be without drugs.....
