This is what my best friend from high school and I call that disturbing yet irresistable genre of seventies, AM radio, driving-in-the-car-with-your-divorced-mom pop-rock gems. They getcha every time.

tracklist

1 Kenny Loggins & Stevie Nicks : Whenever I Call You "Friend"
I had the line "sweet love (blah blah) on a Saturday night..." repeating in my head for years, but had no idea what song it was from, or who was singing. My quest for an answer was epic. And victory was sweet.

5 Charlene : I've Never Been to Me
I have this weird memory of my dad telling me that Henry VIII wrote this song... what could he have been talking about? Is the melody really that similar to "Greensleeves"? Was he going by the "I've been undressed by kings" line (which scandalized me at the time)? Or is this a false memory, along with the one about the Satanic cult that abused me as a child and forced me to sacrifice animals? I wonder...

Many years after this song seared into my unconscious, a friend insisted that the line was "sometimes I think it's a shame that I quit feeling better when I'm feeling no pain." I know he was wrong, but damn it, it's better, and I'm going to keep singing it that way.

I love this stuff. Some great tracks on here. Reminds me of listening to my parents radio when I was a kid. The best so far....

I cannot BELIEVE that I forgot the Doobie Brothers' "What a Fool Believes." It would be in my top three Parents' Divorce classics. Man, I wish I could amend this mix... Geoff, I am all over every song you suggested.

you are god. and i am thinking of some additions. which is just my own parent's divorce. like linda ronstadt's "weed, whites and wine" or "blue bayou." and dan fogerty's "same old lang syne"-- one of the worst songs EVER written. and johnny paycheck's "take this job and shove it" (it was catharsis). and maybe "bess" by kiss. cuz it lifted me up at the time. add to that the entire urban cowboy movie. on another note, my dad's new wife is 40 (second divorce just past) and when i asked him what she listened to (i was making her a mixtape, actually) he said "chill, trance, and techno." (cricket, cricket) is this the new divorce muzak? --geoff

Help! I accidentally typed "Mix Contest 191" as Keyword #3, and now the fruits of my labor are not appearing in the list of entries. Can anyone advise me what to do from here?
