I did a mix of the Bee Gees close to four years ago and then also decided to exclude their disco tunes, but I still chose their most familiar songs prior to their disco period. This time, for the most part, I'm choosing there lesser known creations. Then, I left out their first U.S. pop hit "New York Mining Disaster 1941 (Have You Seen My Wife, Mr. Jones)", but include it here as track 3. That is the biggest hit used on this mix (it reached #14 on the pop charts). Track 14 is their 2nd biggest hit here (which reached #16 on the charts). Track 15 also made it into the top 40 (reaching #34 on the charts), but the sixteen other tracks didn't make the top 40 listings. When I was younger, and not too long ago, I would have overlooked these last sixteen songs as less than stellar, but I've since pretty much changed my mind (but then I do have a soft spot for the early Bee Gees).

tracklist

1 The Bee Gees : Turn Around, Look At Me
Composed by Jerry Capehart, this tune first charted in 1961, with a version by Glen Campbell (reaching #62 on the charts). The Bee Gees knew a good thing when they heard it, but they weren't charting in the U.S. before 1967. The Vogues made it a big hit in 1968 (when it reached #7 on the charts).

This and the next two songs have a country flavor, but don't turn your nose up just yet... Give them a listen, they are not too twangy; I promise (1969 #73).

10 The Bee Gees : Let There Be Love
I have this song listed as 1970, but that was in error (so it is out of order in this mix). It was originally from their album "Idea" which came out in 1968. The song was written by all three brothers.

14 The Bee Gees : My World
Not to be confused with the song "World" which was a non-hit from 1968, but was on their first greatest hits album from 1969, which I lovingly coveted in 1975 (I used that one on my original mix about four years ago). This one did better but, ironically, is probably less familiar; at least it is to me (1972 #16).

I actually prefer early Bee Gees to the disco version and beyond, but I assume I am in a minority. I can recall them being on Top Of The Pops in England a lot in the second half of the sixties.
