liner notes

I spend a lot of time watching people I care about do stupid things. Sometimes I try and stop them. Sometimes they listen. Sometimes I burn them 'feel better!' CDs after they do the stupid things. Sometimes they don't appreciate or want the mixes. Sometimes I don't care about them that much after all. But not you - I like you!

Screw California!

This is a self-pitying mix. This is a mix for when nobody remembers you exist. This is also a "Well, screw you, then!" mix. This is a roughly-thrown together, angry mix.

I find that taking some words from each of these songs is enough explanation of the choice. It is for me, anyway.

Moody Musicals

Ahh, the Great White Way. Musicals are thought of as the ultimate in happy endings, but take a look at some recent shows like Wicked and Spring Awakening and you will see that isn't true. Some sad songs from musicals, whether they end happily or not.

Hope is the thing with feathers

Emily Dickinson wrote, "Hope is the thing with feathers/That perches in the soul." I felt like I hadn't put any happy mixes up, so here's one for you: hopeful tunes, love songs, music that makes me joyful.

rain, rain, rain

It's been raining for weeks... it's raining right now! (I just heard thunder... scary...) Quiet, rainy-day songs with personal associations.

I may be a Californian white girl, but this is what I grew up on.

Blue Over You

Some songs you never want to hear when you're trying to forget someone, but that draw you in anyway. It hurts so good, doesn't it?

I wads incredibly moved by the album, I think it is a musical breakthrough for The Decemberists, the layered guitars, the inc reased rock elements, all breathtakingly beautifu. I know, it's all subjective, but the way the band have developed their recorded sound does put me in mind of Brian Wilson's breakthrough.

Greetings. Recent favorite cliché: the only hot girl within any protagonist's postal code is guaranteed worth dancing/ fighting/ racing for.
