About two months ago I realised that I couldn't take all my friends from University for granted but had to make an effor tto stay in touch with them. A couple of weeks ago I went up to Edinburgh (where I was at University) for the weekend and saw some friends who stayed up there after uni. the whole trip brought a flood of memories back to me. It was a shock to think that my first year at University was 6 years ago. Friday night I went back to a friend's flat and reminded him of a track we listened to back in our first year of uni, we got stoned and played it back to back to back and reminisced.
Since Friday i have been listening to all the tracks that remined me most of that period. There was a very tight group of us who had music and drugs in common and I'm still friends with all of them. My chest hurts with nostalgia and emotion writing this.
I apologise for the self-indulgence of this mix.

This was the track that made up my mind to make this mix. My friend Dan had it one a mix minidisc (Flying Rhino: Reevaluation 2). The minidisc was truly awful but this track was a standout. Great chord, vocal, and production. A very rare combination. If the two of us were either the last two up for the night we used to head back to his flat, smoke, and listen to this track. Until I tracked it down this weekend we had no idea who it was by or what it was called. SHOW LESS

On about my first night in Edinburgh I sold pills to some guy who would be come my best mate. We went to a rave and then went back to a girl called Asia's flat. Asia provided the weed and the music. About 15 of us all ended up at her flat getting stoned that night and we all became firm friends. This was the first time I heard Kruder & Dorfmeister but I found that loads of people I knew had this album and it became part of the soundtrack to my first year at University. First listened to this in Joe's room post clubbing come down. Paul Wittgenstein was a concert pianist who lost his right hand in the first world war. He rearranged pieces so he could play them on one hand and carried on performing concerts. This piece was written specifically for Paul Wittgenstein by Ravel. I love it but not sure how much of that is down to the story and how much down to the music. SHOW LESS
