The covers mx is one of the staples of mixtaping. Here are some i enjoy...and i think that's about all i have to say here.

tracklist

1 John Zorn : lonely woman
Originally written by Ornette Coleman (at least i'm pretty sure, he was reportedly very opposed to performing standards).

Zorn sped this up and it comes out even cooler...which is pretty hard to do, i'd say.

I guess a good amount of people don't know this is a cover, and some people think it's about gay-bashing. Lollerskates.

4 Killout Trash : I've Got Straight Edge
Originally by Minor Threat.

As this is a covers mix, i thought it essential to include at least one song by one of the bands doing the covers, being covered. It's the whole self-referential sort of thing that i'm big into (see Fellini's 8½ for more information). So that's done here, and later on in this tape as well. But here Killout Thrash does a very strange and abstract avant-punk version of one of the classic hardcore anthems.

5 Sonic Youth : Freezer Burn / I Wanna Be Your Dog
Originally by Iggy and the Stooges.

I can't really explain how cool this cover is. It's probably my favorite Stooges song to begin with, but this cover is just so amazing, when Kim Gordon just starts howling "Now i wanna be your dog!" it's wonderful.

6 Gayrilla Biscuits : Fags Like You
Originally by Sick of it All...sort-of.

Honestly, i made this mix just so i could have a valid reason for using a Gayrilla Biscuits song on a mix. For those of you not into hardcore, allow me to explain. Gorilla Biscuits were a hardcore band in the late eighties, and their breakup led to the formation of three of the most prominent acts to ever be defined as "post-hardcore" : CIV, Quicksand, and later on, Rival Schools. But that is not this band, so just may be considered a relatively irrelevant piece of musical knowledge for you.

Gayrilla Biscuits, on the other hand, were a short-lived band that covered classic hardcore songs and changed the lyrics to all be about loving dick. Here, i'll post the lyrics to the original sog by Sick of it All, and Gayrilla Biscuits' interpetation for you to see.

"Friends like You"
Call me a friend but you stab me in the back
you pretend we get along, it's all just an act
you always use people to get what you need
you take advantage of others to satisfy your greed
all you do is take and you never once give
don't you have any shame, the life that you live

We don't need you, you fucking scum
hope that friends like you will never come
when things turn bad for you, don't count on me
cause I'll turn my back on you as you did to me

We don't need friends like you
We don't need friends like you
We don't need friends like you
We don't need friends like you

Call me a friend but you stab me in the back
you pretend we get along, it's all just an act
you always use people to get what you need
you take advantage of others to satisfy your greed
all you do is take and you never once give
don't you have any shame, the life that you live

Like you

And now, "Fags like You"
Call me a friend when you fuck me in the ass
You pretend we're partners, but it's all just an act
You always use cute boys to get what you need
You take advantage of homo's to satisfy your needs
All you do is take and you never will give
Don't you have respect for this queer life we live?
We don't need you, you faggot scum
Hope that fags like you won't ever cum
When you need a stiff cock, don't count on me
Cause I'll turn my back on you as you did to me

We don't need fags like you

10 Voorhees : Posessed to Skate
Originally by Suicidal Tendencies.

I wanted to stay away from the whole "punk covers" thing...and by that i mean, punk bands either covering other punk bands, or punk bands doing popular songs "ironically." But i do have a few of the former on this tape, which is what this falls into. But some of them are relatively fresh takes on the songs they're covering, more interpetive...this isn't one of them. Voorhees just knew how to thrash, and they did it well. And that's all they do here.

11 I Hate You : Glue
Originally by Society System Decontrol (SSD).

While this isn't really a stellar cover...i'd say it's slightly better than Indecision's version of the same song. But the reason why i wanted to include it was the interview clip at the end of it. It really conveys what I Hate You was all about.

Interviewer: How do you guys feel about the violence surrounding your guys name?
Band member: It's not us man, it's our fans.
Interviewer: Just your music motivates people to do certain things...
Band member: I wouldn't even say that. It's just them. It's all their fault. Any explanation that would...further he fault as far away from us as possible, that's what i'm trying to get at.
Interviewer: I gotcha. It's all good.

Thank you for Richard Cheese. He was made popular by KROQ in Los Angeles. The morning show Mark and Brian spawned him out of the Los Angeles market to make him so popular. His version of Down with the Sickness with featured in the newer Dawn of the Dead. Great work on the mix and I really really appreciate the Cheese!!! Rock on.
