I originally got on this site as methadone for quitting MySpace. Then I got pretty over it after I realized no actual mixes changed hands and it was just a popularity contest, and I found this other site called the "International Mixtape Exchange." This sounded pretty dope because every month you got assigned some random member somewhere in the world to make a tape for and someone else got assigned you.

Long story short, three months went by and I made three pretty rad mixes with equally rad artwork and received nothing. At my prompting (read: incessant complaining) the founder, one "Ryan Mixtape" (haw haw haw) finally sent me a fucking CD (!) in a fucking white paper sleeve (!) with a bunch of fucking 311 songs on it (!) so I quit. Worst $10 I ever spent.

Anyways, I came back here for shits and giggles, and decided that this site is what it is and at least I digitally interacted with some reasonably intelligent people with generally good taste. In the meantime, I have a.) quit my high paying job b.) recorded a 7" with my band c.) moved to Oakland d.) spent hundreds of dollars on new records d.) saw a free, intimate Elvis Costello performance and e.) am at my mother's house in southern California drinking red wine and eating cherry pie, so it seemed like a good time to finish this mix I began during my last week of employment a little while ago.

If you wanna make me a real mix, I wanna make you one too. Your people should call my people.

6 Dinosaur Jr. : Kracked
Turns our Dinosaur rules too. I saw them for free a few weeks ago. This song has an incredible screaming wah-wah solo. Another good one from this album is "Lose." When the guitar comes in it sounds like Mascis is strangling a goose.

12 Kevin Ayers : Didn't Feel Lonely Till I Thought Of You
Okay. So it turns out the bassist from the Soft Machine had this incredibly prolific career as a solo artist. He sings like a vampire, has a recurring theme of bananas ("Guru Banana," "Yes, We Have no Mananas") and you can't get his goddamn motherfucking records anywhere. But all the songs LimeWire has managed to cough up for me are OUT OF CONTROL. Seriously, check this guy out, I beg you. Sample lyric: "Woke up this morning, went down on the street, sniffed a few flowers and I went back to sleep." Oh yeah, and there's this other song called "Be Aware of the Dog" that's all instrumental and the only lyric is "YOU'RE NOT HAPPY, YOU'RE JUST STOOOOOOOONNNNEEEDDDDDDDDD."

13 Bob Dylan : Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat
Sometime recently I determined that if I must have a favorite artist, Bob Dylan, in spite of all his shortcomings and his place in history, is probably it for me. And yes, although this song is from a really popular album from one of my least favorite Dylan eras, I listened to it a few days ago and was immensely impressed by how sloppy and and funny and dark "blonde on blone" is; something that earnest little 16 year old me could never have understood. Greil Marcus once wrote that (to paraphrase) "Blonde on Blonde" sounds like someone trying to stand up on a drunken boat and for a moment, succeeding.

17 Bob Seger System : River Deep, Mountain High
My girlfriend Jennie bought this Bob Seger System album half ironically and half seriously. She's really into Tina Turner and loves this song in all its Phil Spectored glory, but also "The Bob Seger System" is a term all our friends and we use to denote the practice of smoking weed in order to alleviate a hangover. Coincidentally (totally coincidentally, I swear to god) we realized that Bob Seger's post-System band was the Silver Bullet Band, and "Catching the silver bullet" is the term we use to denote getting drunk/relaxing generally. I guess you had to be there.

18 Scott McKenzie : If You're Going to San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)
I got into this song right about the time I moved from San Francisco to Oakland. Also, I'm really into wearing flowers in my hair right now because I want to try to kick off the Summer of Love 2007 (it's not about peace and love, it's about love and peace.) I dunno. Seemed like an appropriate place to end this mix.

IMP is pretty cool. The only time I didn't get a mix, someone else was assigned to cover for the deadbeat and they came through with a great cocteau twins mix. Maybe the club improved since 2007?

Anyhow, I dig this mix.

Trading goes on here. I have sendspaced a couple and received a few as well. I have most of Kevin Ayers Island albums back home in England, but a friend is digitizing a lot of that old shit for me so I can let you know when I have it. He is still recording. Nice to see a Wreckless Eric song other than "Whole Wide World" used
