Back in the day I spent a lot of time on the road in the UK and elsewhere. Theatre tours, band gigs, we were always going somewhere to work. There were all kinds of stupid things we did to try and pass the time, but I liked it best late at night, maybe on the way back from a show up North, heading back to London in time for breakfast. I could curl up on the seat and imagine that every now and then, the road trip could be just about the road, and not the destination. Here is the soundtrack to that trip...

tracklist

1 The Allman Brothers Band : Midnight Rider
The road did seem to go on forever. To a cold tired guitarist huddled up in the back of a van after playing to a less than packed club in some unspeakable English town, road songs like this always seemed impossibly romantic.

2 The Rolling Stones : Route 66
Rather than hurtling down the A1 in a broken down Bedford van, it was fun to imagine going to all the places in this song. Even back then, I seriously doubted that Oklahoma City did look so pretty, but I felt sure at the time that it beat Milton Keynes on a wet Wednesday.

3 The Grateful Dead : Truckin'
Never been a fan of the Dead, but I did always like this little ditty with its 'life as a journey' metaphor. "What a long strange trip it's been."

6 Chuck Berry : No Particular Place To Go
When you are travelling to be somewhere by a certain time, the idea of just cruising around (whether you are trying to unbuckle your friends safety belt or not) seems irresistable.

7 Ry Cooder : Every Woman I Konw (Crazy 'Bout an Automobile)
I listened to a lot of Ry Cooder on the road too in the 80s. This buys into the same cars=sex myth that Chuck B sold all those years ago.

11 Grace Jones : Pull up to the Bumper
I love the introduction on this. When I was on the road a lot in the 80's, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare were doing a lot of productions for Island records, and I listened to a whole lot of stuff like this on my original walkman as we whizzed through the night.

If I did ever to get to ride about just for fun, this song was closer to the reality. No ride of mine was ever 'quite a Jaguar.'

13 Chris Rea : The Road To Hell pt1
A song about having to leave the bosom of your family in the North of England to go and drive down to the evil city that is London. I always saw it the other way round. London was my home, my playground, populated with all the weird shit needed to make me happy. I liked coming from a place where the rainbows weren't just in black and white and wherever we were, it was always good to get home.

15 Vince Taylor : Brand New Cadillac
I first heard this on the road on a free cassette compilation that I think came with a long dead music mag called Vox. It is an obscure early British rock and roll track which Joe Strummer used to do in his 101er's days. A coda to all this is that Vince Taylor never made it in the UK but was for a while a star in France. By the mid sixties he was fading from music and the planet generally. He was convinced that aliens existed and that spacemen were here among us. He used to hang around the same Soho coffee bars as one David Jones (A.K.A David Bowie)and he would tell the soon to be great man of his ideas and beliefs. It is ages since I read or indeed thought of any of this, but I believe I read that these meetings may have planted a seed that bore fruit when Bowie came to write Ziggy Stardust.
