description:
I absolutely love songs that use seasons and weather to set the scene or convey the mood of the song. Its a very effective technique, in my humble opinion, and I use this method a lot in my own song writing.
Since most of the songs use "rain" as the main type of weather, the mix ends up leaning quite a bit to the sad side of things, but there's some variation. I decided to pick these songs preferentially too, because I just can't make a mix of songs like "Walking on Sunshine."
I hope this mix will remind me of Oregon too, while I'm way out east staring out the window of the library... or at least remind me being stuck inside isn't always that bad.

tracklist

1 Stephen Ashbrook : Page
Starting out the mix with a semi-upbeat song seems like a good idea, and this track sets the stage for the whole rain-as-downer theme that most songs take (and yes rain can be a good thing, just ask anyone from Oregon). This song also has a slightly country feel that did not fit well in the middle of the mix, but it does lead well into the second song.

2 Blind Melon : No Rain
A classic song that continues the upbeat start to the mix. Its almost impossible to resist this song when it comes on, and that's specifically why I placed it early, to draw in the listener's attention.

3 Jack Johnson : Banana Pancakes
A great song to transition between the catchy start to the mix and the more "traditional" rain songs to come. The mellow tone and call to ignore the rain outside set up the following tracks well by bringing down the energy a little bit.

5 Black Lab : Can't Keep the Rain
This is one of the songs that made me think of this "theme" for the mix, because it uses rain as such a great metaphor or whatever. Point is that it is one of the best examples of that image building thing that I love so much.

6 Live : Lightning Crashes
Believe it or not there is a song that does not use rain as the main weather word. Live did a great job of setting the mood with weather in this song and the tempo fits in well with this part of the mix.

7 The Doors : Riders on the Storm
This song doesn't necessarily use the weather as a blatant metaphor or mood setting tool, but it is a great song. I think the "storm" part works well enough to award it a spot in the mix, and this place is just right to lead into the next song.

9 Echo and the Bunnymen : Stormy Weather
This is another song with "stormy" in the lyrics, which we've already established is good enough for me. I love the sound of this song (and the band in general) and the mood fits quite well with the surrounding songs.

14 Counting Crows : Raining in Baltimore
The tempo shift is a little abrupt, but the last song ends with the feeling of loneliness, and this song picks up on that theme beautifully. Plus it talks a lot about rain and it's been a whole song since we heard that word.

16 Guns N' Roses : November Rain
Once again, pretty much manditory for a mix such as this. This song also gets the end of the mix started. Just one more song after this to truly wrap up the whole project. I think this song is great for the beginning of the end.

17 Third Eye Blind : Motorcycle Drive By
I have always thought this song is a great way to finish up a mix. It has all of the elements of a good finishing song (ends out slow but is powerful through the middle), and it does a great job of showing the two sides to his trip through the weather (bright and then later rain/stormy). This slides the end right in there without making it abrupt.

That's a sweet mix, buddy. It doesn't get a whole lot better than "Banana Pancakes" when doing a rainy day mix.

I give you points for adhering to your theme. I might not dig all the tracks, but look at you and your valiant effort! I have to say though, if I could stab any song over and over again, it'd definitely be 'Banana Pancakes'.
