This is a mix I put together while making a Last.fm playlist. One song, the last one, they listed but you weren't able to even play a sample, while track 5 was a new discovery for me thanks to that site. I tried to make all the songs have a similar melody in order to make them mix as well as possible. Please let me know how I did.
tracklist
| 1 | Temptations : Ain't Too Proud to Beg |
|
Kicks off with a song you can dance to from an ace R&B group (1966 #13). This sets the groove that I try to match melodically for the rest of the mix.

| 2 | Bobby Day : Rockin Robin |
|
Most people are familiar with the Jackson's version of this one, but I decided to go with the original version that peaked at #2 in 1958 (mixes better that way with the next song).

| 3 | The Big Bopper : Chantilly Lace |
|
Title track of the mix. This number doesn't necessarily define exactly what I like, but I like the theme of how the gal entices the guy over the phone to do what she wants. I also like how it ends with the Big Bopper enthusiastically exclaiming at the end "Oh Baby That's What I Like!" (1958 #6).

| 4 | Commander Cody : Hot Rod Lincoln |

The original versions of this song fared from 1960, but this one is the definitive version of the singers preference for fast cars that would drive his Dad to drinkin (1972 #9).

| 5 | Simon And Garfunkel : Kodachrome/Maybellene (live) |
|
This was recorded during a Central Park concert in NYC and issued in 1982. The song describes a passion for photography, but appears to be based on Chuck Berry's song Maybellene which peaked at #5 in '55 (since the songs work so well together as a medley).

| 6 | The Beatles : I've Just Seen a Face |
|
Don't think I need an excuse to use a Beatles song in the mix, but this melody popped into my head after the last song (well this and Hey Bulldog). Anyway, this is an energetic little song that is so good that I used it on one of my mixes of Beatles songs that never reached #1 on the charts (this one was issued in 1965 and never charted).

A killer cover of a wonderful Temptations song which was a #1 hit in 1971. This one never charted (issued in 1978 on the Some Girls album). This song about wanting something so bad you imagine it's really yours...

The Talking Heads version charted better (#26 in 1979), but I decided to go with the original (#48 in 1975). It was kind of a toss up between the two songs, but the original won out partly because the other one wouldn't quite fit time wise on a CD.

Used to think that this song was performed by CCR (but it might have been inspired by that group). This song (reached #23 on the charts in 1970), leads well into the next number.

| 14 | Average White Band : Pick Up The Pieces |

This London based band, formed by Scottish natives, was responsible for some well crafted funk. It's what I like, and a lot of other people felt the same way since this, their first hit, reached #1 on the charts in 1975.
