description:
There are those old old rock songs, the ones that you recognize instantly from the first couple of clanking chords, the same chords that every fifteen year old would be guitar god tries to master within three minutes of accepting delivery of their first electric guitar. The riffs we know and love, love to hate, hate not to hear, all of the above. Come with me now as we enter a simpler age where the only Air Marshalls were the practice amps onboard Led Zeps private jet. Let us travel to RIFF CITY CLASSIC...

tracklist

1 Link Wray : Rumble
This was on my first mixtape here, but it has to be included again. This instrumental almost predates everything here. This is the earliest example of loud riffing I know, and has to start us off. Wray got that 'dirty' sound by making a hole in his speaker cab with a pencil. Nice.

2 Muddy Waters : Mannish Boy
Lest we forget, Those boys in Chicago had a way with a riff when the 60s Brit rockers were still playing with their train sets. This will always sound wonderful!

3 The Kingsmen : Louie Louie
Most of the songs here have the defining riff played by at least one guitar. This is the exception, the chords pounded out on a cheesy but wonderful sounding organ.

5 The Who : I Can't Explain
Townshend could feature on every other song here, but if I had to choose one riff fuelled Who song, I would go for one of the early ones like this.

6 The Rolling Stones : Jumpin' Jack Flash
Bar chord heaven from the Stones. I would love to believe that the following story is true. Legend has it that on a flight from somewhere to somewhere else, Jagger found himself sitting next to John Fogarty of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Fogarty talked about his early life, and when he mentioned that he was indeed born in a cross-fire hurricane, a legend was born. (Possibly!)

7 Cream : Sunshine of Your Love
This is one of the first riff rock songs I ever tried to play. Listening to the track again, the primal drumming of Ginger Baker sounds exceptional. My friend Pete Brown wrote the lyrics for this. He is no fan of it these days, but I don't think he objects to the royalties.

8 Pink Floyd : Interstellar Overdrive
The riff is the song, things deliberately fall apart when it is absent. The Mogwai of their day get all psychedelic and angry at the same time, bless them.

9 Steppenwolf : Born To Be Wild
A cliche in a mixtape of cliches, but without this song we would have nothing to sing everytime we see a little old lady doing 35mph in her VW beetle on the Expressway.

10 Led Zeppelin : Whole Lotta Love
Great riff, heard for many years at the start of Britain's TOTP tv show. The lead guitar solo after all the odd noises is one of the great tension relievers in musical history.

11 Black Sabbath : Paranoid
People do think I am insane because I am NOT frowning all the time actually. Tony Iommi has one finger missing. (Well, half of one finger.) You would never know it.

Don't judge JJ Cale by the recent very horrid Cd with Eric Clapton, but rather on this original of laid back riff rock.

15 David Bowie : Rebel Rebel
I was going to follow Sweet Jane with Bowie's homage to Reed, 'Queen Bitch', but although this is played with notes, not chords, it is one of the most unique riffs in rock, from possibly it's most unique artist.

16 Deep Purple : Smoke On The Water
It's damned if I do, damned if I don't time. Yes, the number one lump of guitar unpleasantness that young persons attempt when they first get their sweaty hands on their Squier Strat for the first time. I can't help it, playing them all today has reminded me, I still ove this stuff.
