description:
During the 1992-93 school year I was in the 8th grade. I carried my yellow walkman to school with me. I listened to hip hop. This mix takes it back to what I was listening to in the hallways, the cafeteria, the library, etc.

tracklist

1 The UMC's : One to Grow On
great energetic, upbeat track to begin with. released in late 1991, but it was in my headphones non-stop in the 8th grade, so i had to include it. a bit of trivia for you, one of the mc's (haas g) now is one half of the production team 'fantom of the beat', and produced 'magic stick' for lil' kim and 50 cent (along with producing for busta rhymes, ghostface killa, and others). but if you're a fan of positive hip hop or classic early 90's stuff, don't sleep on 'fruits of nature.' i first heard this song on an episode of 'nba inside stuff' one saturday morning, during the jam session segment. when it was over, i couldn't remember the name of the song or group, but it must have stuck with me subliminally, because i went to the music store and somehow found it. uptempo and a good start to an album.

2 Arrested Development : Mama's Always on Stage
i was in chicago w/ my dad the summer before my 8th grade year and we had gone to a music store. i saw the poster for this album and it looked different (with the blue and orange and other vivid colors) so i went to the listening station. when i heard 'tennessee' i knew i was buying the tape. but when we got into the car afterwards and put the tape into the rental car, i was going crazy when this song came on. one, it's so funky... the harmonica samples are nice, the constant scratching is great. two, the tempo forces you to move. three, how often do you hear a message like this in hip hop? tv and radio killed em by playing 'mr. wendel' too much (my least favorite song), but many good songs with a different, conscious perspective from the norm. also, when we got back to the west coast, the album didn't hit stores for another day or two for some reason (at least in oregon). so i always thought it was cool that i had the album first before anyone in my area.

7 The Pharcyde : Passing Me By
my dad was a school librarian and media coordinator. he started recording yo! mtv raps for me at school because we didn't get mtv at the house, and the next week he'd bring me the previous week's shows to watch. i'd sit in front of the tv waiting for songs that caught my attention. when i'd hear one, i'd use my tape recorder with an external microphone to get the song to cassette. i'd sit in front of the mono television speaker, silent, hoping to get the best possible recording. if anyone came in the room and started talking or making noise, i'd have to start over. "passing me by" and a subsequent group interview in the 'pharcyde mansion' caught my attention. eventually i picked up the actual tape from sam goody at the mall.

8 Positive K : I Got a Man
i remember one of my 8th grade hoops teammates first had the tape and he played it while we were staying at a hotel for a tournament. everyone was tripping out about the girl voice in the song not really being a girl. nobody could figure out how he did it. that's hilarious now, but this was a popular song back then. plus, his whole album is pretty solid.

9 Brand Nubian : Who Can Get Busy Like This Man ...
even though this album came out in 1990, i played this into the ground in 8th grade. possibly more than any other tape. their next album, 'in god we trust' didn't come out until the spring of my 8th grade year. so 'one for all' got PLENTY of headphone time. became a fan of the charismatic grand puba, but was drawn for some reason to lord jamar's flow (which to me, seemed to still be developing). there was something not quite polished about it to me, which i liked. but on this song, this was all grand puba. absolutely loved the tempo and reggae stylings of the beat and lyrics. classic album, although a lot of people are turned off by some of the political, religious framing. yet a classic hip hop album.

i remember the day i bought this album, sitting with my dad in his nissan sentra, taking the shrink wrap off the cassette. i played this tape so much in 8th grade it's not even funny. quality songs on the whole album. i always liked how the album kicked off on this smooth note. rakim is classic no matter the song. even though there are some other more well-known tracks on the album, this got plenty of rotations in the walkman.
