A couple of years ago a friend and I got serious about the homeless problem. We came up with "Hobo Dance Party", a non-stop Rump Shakeathon where street bound dancers square off for cash and other prizes like a spa retreat at Whispering Springs and Starbucks Gift Cards.

Oh, and if your only experience with Roxy Music is with Avalon, then you should be pleasantly surprised by the rest of their stuff. That's definitely my least favorite album. I'd check out the Greatest Hits album to get a wide swath of their sound and see which version you like - they covered a lot of different genres. Avalon's more of the 80's smooth sound.....they started out being a lot crazier. Brian Eno was a member for their first two records. For what it's worth, Stranded is my favorite album.

I haven't seen the new soul/jazz compilations, but there was some good soul jazz/jazz funk being made in England in the 80s, just before the dawn of acid jazz with people like Working Week, Morrissey Mullen, my friend Dick Heckstall-Smith and many more. Some of that stuff is still around and worth catching. Particularly the first James Taylor Quartet album (no relation to the folkie) and any Brit Jazz compilation put together by Giles Peterson.

You really cant go wrong with Serge's Jane Birkin album. I guess by the "dub" one you mean the reggae album Aux Armes Et Caetera, which is another of my favorites. Initials B.B. great late 60's French pop. Vu de l'extérieur is good as well.
So I think I would get them in that order. If you want early cool jazz in a smoky Paris club, go for Couleur Cafe.

oh jeez. it depends... there are so many projects. my favorite thus far are mr. bungle (not for easy listening), fantomas (which was my first taste -- try director's cut maybe?), and tomahawk. you may be familiar with faith no more... they had a couple of hits quite a few years ago... epic, a cover of lionel richie's easy, and a couple others... recent projects include peeping tom - great album. umm... i would also check out anything on ipecac records. i could talk about this all day but i only have an hour inbetween work and dinner with the family for my birthday so check back with me if you're still interested.

what I love about Experimental Jet Set is that if you play it EXTREMELY loud, you can hear Sister playing underneath, since they recorded over the master tape of Sister.
