liner notes
this one time sophomore year in college i was visiting a friend at mit and somebody, way up on the top floor of the dorm, in the thing that was called the tower, was playing Suicide. so I walked up to find the right staircase and went into this kid's room, which was lit with purple light bulbs and had from floor to ceiling giant tanks filled with exotic fish. i asked the guy what was this music and he gave me the cd to have. it was a pretty nice moment.

The Friday the 13th Badge I
Friday the 13th taught us all the heartwarming lesson that if you are a camp counselor, it's probably not in your best interest to let that (potentially mentally retarded [see wikipedia]) kid swim alone while you are trying to get a piece of ass.

these are songs I've been listening to lately that happen to be about the undead, recently deceased or soon to be long gone.

This is the mix I made for when me and Cormac McCarthy are spooning in our bombshelter.

No listen here, all of you should treasure these sad feelings the long, bitter winters bring. As they say: Gather thine cold, sunless, desolate, brooding mournful days while ye may. Besides, depression makes you DEEP. check out these depressives and the gorgeous music/deep thoughts they produced:

The hardest thing about these potpourri contests is making a mix that is actually listenable. I like every song that is on this list, even that Amy Winehouse one. But all together? That's harder to say. The title of this mix is inspired by the end of Stroszek, the Werner Herzog movie, when that chicken dances and pecks to a sped up version of a Sonny Terry song. Yee Haw.

In spite of all the catastrophes the last seven years have brought, we have amassaed a gloriously cheerful (but then, after repeated listenings, vaguely sinister) soundtrack for the milleneum. Here is my sampling.
um. also, the last seven years have been characterized by a lot of laziness and periodic drunkenness on my part. so, to continue with that, these descriptions are sort of crap. they make no sense.

tales from the R train.
the subway ride during rush hour into Manhattan involves equal parts fear, paranoia, awe and feverish rage. also a little bit of wonder if you're in the right mood and sufficiently caffinated. how did i get to this place anyway? here is the mix that is my soundtrack.

there just isn't enough honky tonk on this website and this mix is going to change that. i made this for a friend of mine who was living in seattle and missing west virginia, where we are from. right now i'm in transition, just moved to brooklyn, ny so i redid the mix. slide guitar, yodeling and banjo picking. you're going to love it, i swear.
the mix tries to follow a narrative arc. read on.

This mix is partially inspired by all the Freaks and Geeks I've been watching. Sometimes I get real nostalgic for when sex still seemed novel and mysterious and you had to devise elaborate ways to make physical contact with the person you liked. this mix covers decades of teenagers making out. its angsty, sappy and melodramatic.

Ok, so as a newcomer, i thought i'd try and just start with the basics. my first was a break up mix and i thought i'd follow up with a road mixtape.
typically, for a road trip mix you want to use equal parts whimsy, songs that everyone knows and can sing along with, and trucking fast down the highway songs. however, as i was putting this together and thinking of my favorite road trip music, it ended up being all sunny afternoon and rollicking jubilance. well, sometimes you just have those kinds of days. so enjoy the mix, even if it is a little saccharine.
