The mixtape treads through ambience, techno, blues, pop, folk, country, rap, and Captain Beefheart. For some reason, it flows really well. OK, so there may not be bands with less than three listeners or anything like that, but it's familiar. I like familiar.

tracklist

1 Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros : Midnight Jam
Starting off with a posthumous track from the legendary Joe Strummer. Quite a while before his passing in '02, even during his time with The Clash, he had shed his punk roots and ventured into country, reggae, and electronica. Midnight Jam is a perfect example of his ability to adapt to lo-fi ambience. Off to an excellent start.

2 The Cure : Alt.End
No low-spirit mixtape could do without The Cure, seriously. The guitars on this track and the previous are similar, very much so. This is the first Cure album I bought, and... um, last...

3 Tree Wave : Instrumental 1B
An electronic bloop-fest that sounds so organic it's creepy. It's a shame this song doesn't feature vocals, but I guess that's sort of the point. I mean, it's an instrumental.

4 The Saboteurs : The Bane Rendition
The Saboteurs are The Raconteurs. They had to change their name in Australia due to some sort of copyright infringement. However, saying you like The Saboteurs makes you more of a hipster. If you were to replicate this mixtape, I'd recommend cutting out the opening drum cue, it takes too much time.

5 Buddy Guy : Sweet Little Angel
With a little nifty Audacity cross-fading, the fuzz induced previous track segues into this mellow jam. You can never go wrong with Buddy Guy, and this song has some of his fiercest (emotionally, not necessarily technically) playing.

6 The Jimi Hendrix Experience : Bold As Love
Following a certain Mister Guy with the pupil who sat at his feet, a touching song by Jimi Hendrix. I'd cut the final eighty-five seconds, though, it seems too ... triumphant? The imagery is great, and I've never met someone who hates Jimi Hendrix.

8 The Futureheads : Danger of the Water
Danger of the Water. The Futureheads are quirky, and this one-chord ditty proves it. The lyrics are nice, and so is the ending volume swells. The simplicity of this song sets up the next one for maximum emotional impact.

9 Radiohead : No Suprises
This is one of those songs that you hear for the first time, but swear you heard it before. It's always been there, right behind the grey matter of your brain. My mother thinks Radiohead is - and I quote - "suicidal background music." I don't think she gets it. The end of Side A.

10 Led Zeppelin : Dazed and Confused
The start of Side B is usually a downward spiral for most mixtapes. Retreaded territory, am I right? Not so with this one. A little bit drastic when compared to No Surprises, but it's a different side so that's OK.

11 Bob Dylan : It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
Probably my favorite track off of this album. The fast tempo of Dazed and Confused's bridge draws comparisons to this. Well, not really... but I pretend it does.

15 Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band : China Pig
For some odd reason... it's just right. Plus, if you flip it back to the first side, you're at Joe Strummer - a musician heavily influenced by none other than Captain Beefheart. End of Side B.
