description:
A simple enough premise this time. Cover versions by an odd hotch-potch of artists of well known 60's and 70's songs. Let the warped nostalgia begin! All but two of these tracks come from "tribute" albums, hated by many, but for some reason, lapped up by me!

tracklist

1 Christian Death : Panic In Detroit
Quite a long time ago, I became addicted to tribute albums, and quite a lot of the tracks on this mix come from this source. I found this one on a goth tribute to Bowie CD. Christian Death always scared me a little. There was a time in London where just about every available bit of wall space was covered with fly posters for CD. This is nasty but good.

2 The Flaming Lips : After The Goldrush
Wayne goes Young. Some odd noise melts away to leave a pretty faithful reading of the seminal Neil Young tune. I first heard this version on a NY tribute album.

3 Elvis Costello : Ship Of Fools/It Must Have Been The Roses
I love his songwriting abilities, but I also have a soft spot for the covers Elvis does. A good example is this little medly of GD songs.

4 Luther Allison : You Can't Always Get What You Want
Now here is a nice twist. This featured on an album of covers by blues artists of Rolling Stones originals. Considering how much the Stones borrowed from the chicago blues form in their early days, this only seems fair somehow. Luther Allison was great live!

5 Rufus Wainwright : Everybody Knows
Songs for someone else to cover in order to commit suicide by! Or something like that. I wanted to see the film this comes from, but haven't as yet! I think Leonard Cohen himself popped up at the end of the movie.

6 Dropkick Murphys : Guns Of Brixton
The Clash are without question one of my favourite bands, and my friend Gordy has been badgering me every waking hour to get into the Dropkick Murphys, which I finally have, and that is all I have to say on the matter!

7 Cud : Lola
I think covers work best sometimes the more unlikely they seem before hearing them. This is a case in point. It does work though!

9 The Mission : Tomorrow Never Knows
Another Goth cover! I did think about some of the Motown Beatles covers around, but this piece of fluff from Wayne Hussey has charm. I wonder if this is the first mixtape on the collective with two guys called Wayne involved?

10 bruce springsteen : John Henry
Sometimes, you get an artist doing a whole tribute album to another artist, such as Springsteen's Pete Seeger tribute earlier in 2006. I wasn't sure about the jugband + instrumentation before I heard the album, but the enthusiasm of the playing is soooo infectious.
