Setting the tone for what is yet to come, the opening track is among the most important ones. Thusly, I had the inspiration to pick through my collection and select a few of my favourite album-openers.

Part I of III.

tracklist

1 Ratatat : Seventeen Years
"I've been rapping for about seventeen years"

One of the best album-openers I know of, this song starts with a bang, but somehow ends up in uber-mellow land. For an album opener, it sure sounds a lot like an outro.

2 Aphex Twin : 4
Crossfading this amazing cut with the previous is highly suggested. The frenetic beats on this track make me giddy. Even though it is a 'techno-ish' track, it flows into the next track quite well.

Plus, Aphex is a God.

3 The Beta Band : Assessment
This song makes it into a lot of my mixes for the simple reason that it makes me smile. Despite the fact that this album as a whole (Heroes to Zeros) is a bit weak, they sure start with their best foot forward.

"seventeen years" is a brutal opener for this mix (or any, for that matter) but i think "stinkfist" and "bring the ruckus" are highlights. nice concept.
