tracklist

1 Christie Front Drive : Saturday
A wondeful album (and mixtape) opener. Builds up wonderfully from the lo-fi guitar and piano interplay at the beginning into the actual song itself, but not for so long that it drags on too much. An all time favourite from the band.

2 Shermer : Hand Feed Machines
Brittish 3-piece from Stroke-on-trent (I think...) that kick out some fantastic melodic, but gritty punk somewhat reminiscent of early Hot Water Music. This track follows on nicely from CFD's track as it's a bit more upbeat without proving too much of a contrast. It's also damn catchy.

3 Couch : Plan
This track shifts the mood down a few gears, with it's strangely dark and eerie, but driving post-rock. Guitar harmonics, minor chords on piano and a steady and distorted drum beat are the order of the day here. Not quite Godspeed.

4 The Pine : Days Slipping By
Keeping the down-tempo vibe for a little bit longer is this track by The Pine. One of my favourite bands to have emerged out of the DIY punk/hardcore scene in the US, however, calling them either would be a crime to thier wonderfully unique take on the genre. Opening with huge, shoegaze guitar chords, punctuated by a few wailing guitar bends, all drenched in reverb, it then drops away to complete minimalisim, with only the bass and vocals remaining, other than a few tom hits at the end of every bar. This man has an absolutely breathtaking voice.

5 Spy vs. Spy : How The Cat Was Invented
The mix now needs a quick pick me up, and it comes in the form of another small uk band (unfortunately now defunct): Spy vs. Spy. Heavily influenced by Cap'n Jazz, but a bit faster and more swingy. Great stuff.

6 Penut Butter Disco : Can You Love A Robot?
Every mix needs either a danceable electro song, or a decent excuse as to why it doesn't. I went for the first. Sugary vocals and synths, and low, low bass. Just what the doctor ordered.

7 Orchid : Weekend At The Fire Academy
I find it really hard to make a mix without including atleast one blisteringly fast and abrasive song, and it's useually an Orchid one. Sounds like trying to eat someones face.

8 Múm : Nightly Cares
In need of a little break after the full frontal assault of Orchid, I put on this track. I love the way Múm create music so subtley complex that manages to appear so simple on the surface. My personal favourite is the call and responce of the trumpet with the melodica throught the tune.

More mood/tempo shifting (can you see a pattern in what I do?) from a band I stumbled across by accident and became one of my all time favourites. A must hear band, if only for the vocals.

Thrashy crust metal. Nothing else needs to be said other than how much of an urge it gives me to inexplicably run round in circles while pumping my fist in the air.

12 The Samuel Jackson Five : Easily Misunderstood
In the world of post-rock, bands sometimes seem to get too caught up in being breary and huge and forget to have fun. The Samuel Jackson Five is the sound of a bunch of friends hitting things and cracking jokes in a practice room together, then hitting the studio in the hope of a record that people will enjoy listening to as much as they made. Atleast, that's how I see it. I did enjoy it too.

13 rainer maria : Breakfast Of Champions
Possibly my alltime favourite band (well, bar the newer stuff, they sound like a female fronted Feeder or somthing now, it's horrible), especially this track, cause it just underpins everyhting I love about them and the way they make thier vocals play off one another. Makes me feel like a giddy teenager agai... oh.

14 Funeral Diner : Yeah, You Remember That
A song that absolutely took my breath away when I first heard it and still does. The most amazingly violent and furious, yet passionate opening to a song I've heard to date, and the amazing breakdown that follows it, only to be succeeded by a huge, pounding wall of despair caught up in distortion and trying to escape. Still has the same effect as it did the first time round.

18 Reds : Lee Greenwood (Is My Co-Pilot)
One of my favourite albums of last year, Reds kick up a fist-pumping storm of a noise, somehow managing to be both aggressive, but having a groove, and not coming of as some terribe funk-metal act. It has some fantastic lyrics too boot.

20 Gantz : La Complainte De Ruteboeuf
...and so, the mix begins to come to a close, and it is such signaled by something Epic. It might sound like Muse or something at the beggining, but bear with it. Driving, thumping drums underpin enourmous guitars, then drop away to reveal a cello which plays of the tear-jerking vocals (curtousy of the vocalist now in Daitro I believe). A fantastic penultimate track.
