tracklist

1 Boris : Parting
This is an amazing song to start something off with. It opens up Pink (if you havn't heard it) and it's just other-worldly. It builds up and progresses so well, making it a great opener, and its also just such a wonderful, wonderful song. It's a guitar tone like no other, it's sounds like a shoegaze enthusiast playing inside a cave and the way the vocals just sort of seam to float over the top with that sort of backwards tape effect aswell just makes this one of the most perfect songs to lie in bed in the dark to.

2 Bucket Full Of Teeth : Dark Colossus
VIOLENCE!!! GORE!!! GUTS!!

Just a few of the things that come to mind with this song. I'd call it a change of pace from the track before, but that is far too much of an understatement. Possibly my favourite grind band ever, if only cause theres so much more to them than just grind.

3 robert johnson : Cross Road Blues (Take 1)
Can you really have a depressing mope around the house kind of mix without some classic blues? You probably can, and infact, I've done it many a time but that doesn't mean that they arn't the better for it.

The song that made him famous and sparked rumours that he had sold his soul to get such blistering blues-slide licks. He probably just sat in his room and practiced lots.

4 Orchid : The Action Index
More fast violence, this time from Orchid (did I mention Bucket Full Of Teeth have Orchid members? I'm not sure if its just one, or if they both are, but either way, damn sure of a connection). I personally cant make depressing tapes without a good dose of abrasive brutality cause it just seems to work so much better for me. This tune also allows zero time to prepare yourself, which is tops.

5 Casiotone For The Painfully Alone : Tonight Was A Disaster
To me there is something about incredibly lo-fi sounds that just increase a sence of mourning or help give off more terrible melancholy vibes, and this song is just so perfect for it. It's so unbelievably minimalistic and understated and consits of no more than some held organ-esque chords on some cheap kids keyboard and a bit of vocals over the top, and a tiny bit of a melody break, just for kicks. All recorded in glorious, sweet lo-fi.

6 Saxon Shore : May 26
This has to be one of the most hauntingly depressing songs I have ever heard in my life. Theres something about the complete lack of any percussion that gives it a shapeless and ambiguous feel and just creates this whole sparse atmosphere which sounds like the kind of music you'd stare at the moon ont he top of a hill to, while alone.

7 rainer maria : Made In Secret
For me, this is Rainer Maria at thier finest. The whole EP this comes of (thier first release) just has this amazing urgency to it, the vocals aren't quite screamed more just sung so loudly and with so much energy to the point where their voices break up and their throats become sore. It's just so raw and feels so genuine to me that it seems to make perfect sence.

8 The One AM Radio : I Think This Is My Exit
This guy has to be one of the best singer/songwriters of our generation. Throw away your Jose Gonzales albums and get some stuff by this guy. The way he fuses these bubbling, dreamy synths with an acoustic guitar and an open, spacious drum sound just complimetns his voice so well but still leaves room for him to bring in some strings. A man who truely knows the ins and outs of his own voice and how to build around it.

9 Petethepiratesquid : I'm Not Dancing Because I Like This Band, I'm Dancing Because I'm Cold
One of my favourite bands to come out of Europe in recent times, Petethepiratesquid make this unique, dark and urgent indie music (for want of a better term) which I love so much. This track is about growing up and watching everything you once knew change, from trees disapearing from the street you once lived on, to watching the people you once knew become jaded punks, only to realise that you yourself are on.

This song also has an outro that just has to be heard by everyone.

10 The Pine : Shovelglove
This song is bordering on perfect for me. The way it just builds on itself and constantly heightens is amazing. With the slow adding in of extra guitars, then the cymbal rolls (oh god yes the cymbal rolls!) and then it all just comes in making it one of the best ballads ever, and the kind you could almost sing round a campfire.

11 Khanate : Dead
Sometimes I wish that time was not such a huge restraint in mixes, that they could go on forever and nobody would care, and it's bands like Khanate that make that wish stronger. This song clocks in just under 10 minutes and is still the shortest on the album which makes them almost impoissible to include on tapes. It can damn well pull off if you can find a way of getting them on though, possibly the darkest and most sinister band ever to exist, Khanate feel like being abducted and then told that you are going to be set alight and hacked into pieces while your abductor fucks your wife at the same time... or something. I don't know, but its something perverse and wrong anyway.

Unadulterated noise for one minute solid. Think Merzbow with a bizzare kind of stab at a bassline and you've got it.

13 Anathallo : Kasa no Hone (the Umbrella's Bones)
You know how sometimes tracks make you tingle all over because they're that damn good? Well no track does it to me on the level this does. I almost can't listen to it, and if I do I have to take a break afterwards. I can't pinpoint exactly what it is about this song either. Is it the beautiful choral, wind like "ooh"-ing? The swelling sounds in the background that seem not be there but also envelope you within themselves? The sparse but somehow intense rhythmical accompaniment? The etheral and angel-like lead vocals in Japanese? It could be all of these, and I think it is, but whatever it is, I feel that it is the perfect song to end this tape and probably will be the perfect song to end many.

I love Boris so much. Just for "Parting" (or "Farewell," as I know it) this mix already has my love. Khanate was also pretty genius.
