description:
This might be my strangest mix yet, but I think the songs and artists blend pretty well to evoke the feeling of driving through a neverending desert in the middle of a blazing summer. Rock driven, spanish influenced, it's like the continuation of a Tarantino soundtrack. But prettier.

tracklist

1 Los Lobos : Cancion Del Mariachi (Morena De Mi Corazon)
The Spanish song is the perfect way to start off such a seemingly random and eclectic mix. Beautiful guitar and a driving rhythmn that necessitates driving through the hot southwest on an empty highway.

2 Devotchka : The Enemy Guns
I'm infatuated with this band. This has the same feel as the previous song, but with a modern, foreign Quentin Tarantino feel to it. Minus the gore. The vocals swoon and crescendo over the innumerable instruments used to carve out this beauty of a song.

3 Heart : Crazy on You
The best Heart song, period, for the acoustic guitar solo at the beginning alone. The Wilson sisters truly rocked early on in their game, and really, "there's nothing left to do tonight but go crazy on you." A classic rock standard.

4 Azure Ray : 4th of July
A quick turn to the mellow. This song sounds like it's been sitting in the sun too long and is slowly melting. Heatstroke in audio.

5 Santana : Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen
This picks it up just a little bit with classic Santana guitar that blissfully dazes along with the controlled stumbling of his lyrics. Another track that's not hard to find on almost any classic rock station.

6 Tito & Tarantula : After Dark
I'm such a fan of this silly movie, but this song was made better by a hundred because it's the one that the Salma Hayek vampire dances to with the giant snake. HOT HOT HOT. This song pretty much inspired this mix, and is a mainstay on my iPod.

7 Rilo Kiley : Jenny, You're Barely Alive
Muffled with an easy going beat, I thought it nestled in well with the other tracks. Simple enough.

8 The Flaming Lips : The W.A.N.D (The Will Always Negates Defeat)
In the land of Fear and Loathing, I thought The Lips were an appropriate add. A little more electronic than the other tracks, the guitar makes it all worthwhile. They always manage to do something completely different, and this track doesn't stray far from that theory.

9 Franz Ferdinand : Evil And Heathen
This song seemed to pair well with the previous, and it was a little peppier to liven things up a bit, so no one falls asleep at the wheel or anything. And I'm usually a fan of any song that declares "I'm evil and a heathen!"

10 Iggy and the Stooges : Search and Destroy
Love the song, love the movie. If you know Iggy, you know 'Search and Destroy'. Before he started sounding like he looks.

11 Wolfmother : Woman
I included this less because it was "new and hip" and more because it echoes the classic rock ends of the mix, and continues that steady, almost anthemic, rock beat. And it's about awesome chicks. I'm assuming.

12 Jon Spencer Blues Explosion : Help These Blues
While applicable for a hot and sweaty car, this song also works well in a hot and sweaty bar. Soulful, carefree, meandering... but somehow in a concise manner. It starts to prep the listener for the next song.

13 Kyuss : Thong Song
I could have obviously used a ton of Kyuss songs for this mix, but this one has been a favorite of mine for a while now. Unlike all the other tracks, this song abruptly stops and starts, linked only by John Garcia's raspy wail and a casual guitar in the background. It works in a weird way.

14 Chingon : Malaguena Salerosa
Also an inevitable addition was another Tarantino-related track, this one which plays during the final scenes of Kill Bill Vol. 2. Gorgeous, lush guitars and an uplifting and swirling beat that always makes me want to dance.

15 The Who : Magic Bus
I'm going to take gamble and say that this song was written and possibly recorded under the influence of at least one illegal substance. Ah, the 60s. Features a great percussional section (Keith Moon was still alive for this one) and a strange dynamic between the band members.

17 Blur : Out of Time
"Feel the sunshine/ on your face." Super chill, perfect for winding down a long day on the road. Having a track featuring Damon Albarn in one incarnation or another seemed to be a requirement for this mix. "Watch the world spinning/ gently out of time."

18 Jeff Buckley : So Real
Buckley's voice seems like it careens over the edge of a cliff and back again. Unlike the ill-fated, cheestastic desert roadtrip film 'Thelma and Louise,' which has nothing to do with this gorgeous song. Continuing with the more mellow end of the mix, Monsieur Buckley handles the intricacies of lyrics better than anyone since. Beautiful and haunting.

19 Chris Isaak : Wicked Game
Adding this song is almost too expected, but I couldn't resist. We all know it's sexy. We all know that the video is sexier. We all know that it's become a stereotype of itself over the years, but still... "World was on fire/ no one could save me but you."

20 Charo : Suenos de Espana
I'm a huge sucker for good Spanish guitar. And Charo, minus her crazy personality, is an excellent guitarist. This song has a dreamy, half-conscious quality to it, which makes the title (Dreams of Spain) completely appropriate. It's simple and breathtaking. A perfect way to end a mix that has a spanish flair.

Haha, yeah she was on a season of The Surreal Life... the one with Dave Coulier and Flava Flav. CLASSIC!

You know I ALMOST used the Live at Leeds version! But I've never been a huge fan of live tracks on a studio mix. The sound's always off, you have the audience ambiance in there... eh, yeah. I left it out.

How do you upload a mix??

Extra points Black Magic Woman and Magic Bus (although the Live At Leeds version is the only way to go).

This mixtape definently intruiges me... you should upload it.
